I didn't realize how big a problem the Remote Desktop rename is, and someone besides me should have done this sooner. Here are some numbers, time and cost, that Microsoft has forced on the world with their marketing decisions:
I'm starting with some guesses with help from Copilot:
- 13 to 19 million global Windows Support techs
- $20 / hr global average Windows Support tech. These are all over the place: $7 in Africa, $25 in the US (not including California)
Techs attempting to troubleshoot issues will be unable to find needed information amongst Windows OS and App Store responses. What might take 5 minutes for a tech with RDP, can now take 20 minutes and more. Multiply that by 13 million techs and that's a severe time loss for just ONE incident a tech. Specifically if 11 million support staff field just one Windows app related ticket a year, the extra 15 minutes spent for a staff member would equate to $55,000,000 wasted each year!!
This doesn't include time wasted by all users needing remote access attempting to find the product and support themselves.
Bottom line, renaming Remote Desktop to Windows app is a terrible implementation thought up by marketers and not support and sales people, that will cost companies millions of dollars and millions of hours in wasted time each year.
