As generative AI usage continues to surge and become an integral part of daily workflows, organizations are prioritizing privacy and security—and we continue to evolve Copilot experiences in Windows to address these needs. Starting later this month, for organizations with managed PCs running the Pro or Enterprise edition of Windows[1], users signing in with a work or school account will receive an updated experience.

Windows 11 plays an important role in your Zero Trust strategy. So does Microsoft Copilot. We're ramping up data protection to help you advance your security goals while ensuring employees have seamless access to the AI productivity tools they need to stay ahead of the curve.
Microsoft Copilot will offer enterprise data protection for users signed in with an Entra account. This is a significant step in strengthening data protection for Microsoft Copilot as the enhanced security, privacy, and compliance controls and commitments available for Microsoft 365 Copilot will now extend to Microsoft Copilot prompts and responses. If you were hesitant about adopting Copilot for your work needs, now is the time to consider integrating it into your organization.
When Microsoft Copilot updates to enterprise data protection (EDP), commercial data protection (CDP) will no longer apply. EDP is offered at no additional cost when a user signs in with an Entra account and does not require additional action from IT to activate. Additionally, both the in-app and browser experiences for Copilot will shift to an ad-free user interface to minimize disruptions.
Easy access for optimal productivity
Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise have been designed to meet the productivity, security, and manageability requirements of organizations—and we're applying the same approach to Microsoft Copilot*. Windows 11, together with Microsoft 365 apps, delivers the best experience for employees to work more efficiently and maximize productivity and creativity with Microsoft Copilot.
With updates coming soon to managed PCs, users with work or school accounts can easily access Microsoft Copilot through the Microsoft 365 app if they or their admin have elected to pin Copilot in the Microsoft 365 app. The Microsoft 365 app comes pre-installed on all Windows PCs. This app can be uninstalled or reinstalled from the Microsoft Store and pinned to the taskbar or Start menu as desired.
The Microsoft 365 app simplifies access to Copilot, enabling people to create, share, and collaborate in one place alongside their favorite Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For commercial organizations, Microsoft will prioritize future Copilot developments on the experience in the Microsoft 365 app, instead of Copilot in Windows.
The updated entry point for Microsoft Copilot within the Microsoft 365 app
The Microsoft 365 app can be pinned to the taskbar in Windows. The Microsoft Copilot app can be pinned to the navigation bar within the Microsoft 365 app for easy access.
Accessing Microsoft Copilot within the Microsoft 365 app is available at no additional cost for users with an Entra account. Copilot chat within the app is grounded in information from the web and does not access organizational resources or content, such as business apps, email, or other data that resides in a tenant boundary. The same web-based chat experience is available via a user's default browser when accessing microsoft.com/copilot with an Entra account.
If you have the add-on Microsoft 365 Copilot license, you will have access to both web and work modes in chat, with the option to toggle between the two. The work experience is an AI chat experience grounded in work data inside a tenant boundary. It provides the added benefits of Microsoft Graph-bound chat capabilities and the ability to search across meetings, email, files, and more.
When will this happen?
The update to Microsoft Copilot to offer enterprise data protection is rolling out now.
The shift to the Microsoft 365 app as the entry point for Microsoft Copilot is coming soon. Changes will be rolled out to managed PCs starting with the September 2024 optional non-security preview release, and following with the October 2024 monthly security update for all supported versions of Windows 11. These changes will be applied to Windows 10 PCs the month after. This update is replacing the current Copilot in Windows experience.
Want to get started? You can enable the Microsoft Copilot experience for your users now by using the TurnOffWindowsCopilot policy and pinning the Microsoft 365 app using the existing policies for Taskbar pinning.
Things to consider for IT
Copilot innovations are designed to help everyone, including IT professionals. We want to emphasize that we will continue to offer controls so you can seamlessly manage AI experiences and adopt them for your organization at your own pace.
If you decide to enable Microsoft Copilot for your users, it will appear in the Microsoft 365 app starting mid-September. The option to pin Copilot to the navigation bar within the Microsoft 365 app can be found under Settings on the Copilot page in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
If you do not select to enable Copilot, you can decide whether users will be prompted to pin and enable Microsoft Copilot themselves within the Microsoft 365 app.
If Copilot is pinned, it will be prominently accessible in the Microsoft 365 app as seen in the screenshot above. For more information, see Pin Microsoft Copilot to the navigation bar.

We are encountering the same issues you are all discussing - feels like a step backwards.
rajha1750 and Krishanthad Totally agree about the badge color not being green and the poor choice of wording. Whats the point of telling staff to look for the green protected sheild / message as per the adoption kit and then it being changed to a hard to spot white shield?
Not impressed by the new version. I know it is more secure but removing features and the interface changes make it feel like a poorer more basic product.
The Microsoft 365 app pinning - no one uses this app in our organisation. Would make more sense to just have a standalone copilot app.

Additionally, can we fix the wording around the new shield icon? It currently shows two different texts when we hover over the icon in different places.
when we are in Edge sidebar Copilot chat it is saying - "Microsoft's enterprise compliance standards apply to this chat. Use discretion when sharing personal and organizational data."
There like three different UIs for Copilot right now. The one on Bing, copilot.microsoft.com, and microsoft.com/copilot. Then there is a new UI rolling out.. hoping that fixes this finally.
rajha1750 I agree with you. I really miss the green badge of protection that helps show the data is being protected. This is a reassuring feature for my teachers to see and know that their data is safe and not being used to train the model. I am wondering why this green badge was taken away from the Copilot page.
Is there any change regarding access to Copilot trough MS Edge browser in right upper corner? We noticed that shield regarding company data protection is not green anymore. We get some calls from our user if access through MS Edge to Copilot is still safe regarding company data. Also paste of screens and insertion of attachment has gone. All those features work through web access or trough copilot application.

As another person has stated, is this the end of the Windows Copilot capability? Such as Copilot being able to enable dark mode on behalf of the user? This worked through the Copilot (Preview) sidebar. After installing the preview patch, neither the Copilot app (web experience) or Microsoft 365 app have access to the Windows integration. It will only print instructions for the user to follow.
To whoever is responsible for this change, I urge you to reconsider the rollout of this in its current state, the user experience change is awful and not intuitive.
Accessing Copilot should be facilitated through an app called "Copilot" not "Microsoft 365 (Office)" as its not intuitive, additionally pressing the "Copilot" key on a keyboard which has this button continues to launch the Copilot app which doesn't support work accounts, there is no ability to remap this key to the Microsoft 365 (Office) app.
This change needs a rework before it goes live.
You state "users logging in with an Entra account will soon be redirected to the browser experience of Microsoft Copilot with EDP" - When you say "soon" is this prior to the go-live for this change? Because if it isn't I think it would be wise to put a pause on this change.
Removing the Copilot icon from the taskbar, recommending that we then pin the Microsoft 365 (Office) app to the taskbar, only to later reintroduce work account support to the Copilot app, which then would require us to unpin the Microsoft 365 (Office) app and then pin the new Copilot app just doesn't make sense..
Reanne_Wong I wanted to give myself some time to digest this before I stated my opinion in case it changed, but it hasn't. I really think it's a step backward to have the Copilot app redirect to the web browser. Having a standalone app has really improved our users' perception of Copilot, and understanding of what it is, and thus usage. That makes me happy, because the ultimate goal in IT is to make users more efficient. Before the standalone app, we had a shortcut to the Copilot web application, but it wasn't utilized much. With this change, Copilot is becoming just another browser tab, rather than a standalone application. For more technical users, this doesn't matter because they/we can just rearrange windows to fit our workflow. But many users are not technical. There's something about the concept of a separate app that users love, that really distinguishes the app from just another website. This change is the opposite of "Easy access for optimal productivity".
and since you'll be accessing from the M365 app which is essentially just the web client anyways, does that mean that Copilot will no longer have or be worked on to interact with Windows itself? That functionality is just being scrapped?
Unless I'm missing it, it appears the guidance for enforcing CDP/EDP (DNS CNAME) was scrubbed from MS documentation (Wayback Machine reference Manage Copilot | Microsoft Learn (archive.org)).
Is there new guidance on how to enforce sign in to Copilot so prompts are protected by EDP?

Microsoft Copilot will offer enterprise data protection for users signed in with an Entra account. This is a significant step in strengthening data protection for Microsoft Copilot as the enhanced security, privacy, and compliance controls and commitments available for Microsoft 365 Copilot will now extend to Microsoft Copilot prompts and responses. If you were hesitant about adopting Copilot for your work needs, now is the time to consider integrating it into your organization.

When Microsoft Copilot updates to enterprise data protection (EDP), commercial data protection (CDP) will no longer apply. EDP is offered at no additional cost when a user signs in with an Entra account and does not require additional action from IT to activate. Additionally, both the in-app and browser experiences for Copilot will shift to an ad-free user interface to minimize disruptions.

Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise have been designed to meet the productivity, security, and manageability requirements of organizations—and we're applying the same approach to Microsoft Copilot*. Windows 11, together with Microsoft 365 apps, delivers the best experience for employees to work more efficiently and maximize productivity and creativity with Microsoft Copilot.

With updates coming soon to managed PCs, users with work or school accounts can easily access Microsoft Copilot through the Microsoft 365 app if they or their admin have elected to pin Copilot in the Microsoft 365 app. The Microsoft 365 app comes pre-installed on all Windows PCs. This app can be uninstalled or reinstalled from the Microsoft Store and pinned to the taskbar or Start menu as desired.

The Microsoft 365 app simplifies access to Copilot, enabling people to create, share, and collaborate in one place alongside their favorite Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For commercial organizations, Microsoft will prioritize future Copilot developments on the experience in the Microsoft 365 app, instead of Copilot in Windows.

The updated entry point for Microsoft Copilot within the Microsoft 365 app

The Microsoft 365 app can be pinned to the taskbar in Windows. The Microsoft Copilot app can be pinned to the navigation bar within the Microsoft 365 app for easy access.

Accessing Microsoft Copilot within the Microsoft 365 app is available at no additional cost for users with an Entra account. Copilot chat within the app is grounded in information from the web and does not access organizational resources or content, such as business apps, email, or other data that resides in a tenant boundary. The same web-based chat experience is available via a user's default browser when accessing microsoft.com/copilot with an Entra account.

If you have the add-on Microsoft 365 Copilot license, you will have access to both web and work modes in chat, with the option to toggle between the two. The work experience is an AI chat experience grounded in work data inside a tenant boundary. It provides the added benefits of Microsoft Graph-bound chat capabilities and the ability to search across meetings, email, files, and more.

The update to Microsoft Copilot to offer enterprise data protection is rolling out now.

The shift to the Microsoft 365 app as the entry point for Microsoft Copilot is coming soon. Changes will be rolled out to managed PCs starting with the September 2024 optional non-security preview release, and following with the October 2024 monthly security update for all supported versions of Windows 11. These changes will be applied to Windows 10 PCs the month after. This update is replacing the current Copilot in Windows experience.

If you decide to enable Microsoft Copilot for your users, it will appear in the Microsoft 365 app starting mid-September. The option to pin Copilot to the navigation bar within the Microsoft 365 app can be found under Settings on the Copilot page in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

If you do not select to enable Copilot, you can decide whether users will be prompted to pin and enable Microsoft Copilot themselves within the Microsoft 365 app.

As generative AI usage continues to surge and become an integral part of daily workflows, organizations are prioritizing privacy and security—and we continue to evolve Copilot experiences in Windows to address these needs. Starting later this month, for organizations with managed PCs running the Pro or Enterprise edition of Windows[1], users signing in with a work or school account will receive an updated experience.

Windows 11 plays an important role in your Zero Trust strategy. So does Microsoft Copilot. We're ramping up data protection to help you advance your security goals while ensuring employees have seamless access to the AI productivity tools they need to stay ahead of the curve.

Microsoft Copilot will offer enterprise data protection for users signed in with an Entra account. This is a significant step in strengthening data protection for Microsoft Copilot as the enhanced security, privacy, and compliance controls and commitments available for Microsoft 365 Copilot will now extend to Microsoft Copilot prompts and responses. If you were hesitant about adopting Copilot for your work needs, now is the time to consider integrating it into your organization.

When Microsoft Copilot updates to enterprise data protection (EDP), commercial data protection (CDP) will no longer apply. EDP is offered at no additional cost when a user signs in with an Entra account and does not require additional action from IT to activate. Additionally, both the in-app and browser experiences for Copilot will shift to an ad-free user interface to minimize disruptions.

Easy access for optimal productivity

Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise have been designed to meet the productivity, security, and manageability requirements of organizations—and we're applying the same approach to Microsoft Copilot*. Windows 11, together with Microsoft 365 apps, delivers the best experience for employees to work more efficiently and maximize productivity and creativity with Microsoft Copilot.

With updates coming soon to managed PCs, users with work or school accounts can easily access Microsoft Copilot through the Microsoft 365 app if they or their admin have elected to pin Copilot in the Microsoft 365 app. The Microsoft 365 app comes pre-installed on all Windows PCs. This app can be uninstalled or reinstalled from the Microsoft Store and pinned to the taskbar or Start menu as desired.

The Microsoft 365 app simplifies access to Copilot, enabling people to create, share, and collaborate in one place alongside their favorite Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. For commercial organizations, Microsoft will prioritize future Copilot developments on the experience in the Microsoft 365 app, instead of Copilot in Windows.

The updated entry point for Microsoft Copilot within the Microsoft 365 app
\n
The Microsoft 365 app can be pinned to the taskbar in Windows. The Microsoft Copilot app can be pinned to the navigation bar within the Microsoft 365 app for easy access.
\n
Accessing Microsoft Copilot within the Microsoft 365 app is available at no additional cost for users with an Entra account. Copilot chat within the app is grounded in information from the web and does not access organizational resources or content, such as business apps, email, or other data that resides in a tenant boundary. The same web-based chat experience is available via a user's default browser when accessing microsoft.com/copilot with an Entra account.

If you have the add-on Microsoft 365 Copilot license, you will have access to both web and work modes in chat, with the option to toggle between the two. The work experience is an AI chat experience grounded in work data inside a tenant boundary. It provides the added benefits of Microsoft Graph-bound chat capabilities and the ability to search across meetings, email, files, and more.

When will this happen?

The update to Microsoft Copilot to offer enterprise data protection is rolling out now.
\n
The shift to the Microsoft 365 app as the entry point for Microsoft Copilot is coming soon. Changes will be rolled out to managed PCs starting with the September 2024 optional non-security preview release, and following with the October 2024 monthly security update for all supported versions of Windows 11. These changes will be applied to Windows 10 PCs the month after. This update is replacing the current Copilot in Windows experience.

Copilot innovations are designed to help everyone, including IT professionals. We want to emphasize that we will continue to offer controls so you can seamlessly manage AI experiences and adopt them for your organization at your own pace.

If you decide to enable Microsoft Copilot for your users, it will appear in the Microsoft 365 app starting mid-September. The option to pin Copilot to the navigation bar within the Microsoft 365 app can be found under Settings on the Copilot page in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

If you do not select to enable Copilot, you can decide whether users will be prompted to pin and enable Microsoft Copilot themselves within the Microsoft 365 app.

We are encountering the same issues you are all discussing - feels like a step backwards.
rajha1750 and Krishanthad Totally agree about the badge color not being green and the poor choice of wording. Whats the point of telling staff to look for the green protected sheild / message as per the adoption kit and then it being changed to a hard to spot white shield?
Not impressed by the new version. I know it is more secure but removing features and the interface changes make it feel like a poorer more basic product.
The Microsoft 365 app pinning - no one uses this app in our organisation. Would make more sense to just have a standalone copilot app.

There like three different UIs for Copilot right now. The one on Bing, copilot.microsoft.com, and microsoft.com/copilot. Then there is a new UI rolling out.. hoping that fixes this finally.

rajha1750 I agree with you. I really miss the green badge of protection that helps show the data is being protected. This is a reassuring feature for my teachers to see and know that their data is safe and not being used to train the model. I am wondering why this green badge was taken away from the Copilot page.

Is there any change regarding access to Copilot trough MS Edge browser in right upper corner? We noticed that shield regarding company data protection is not green anymore. We get some calls from our user if access through MS Edge to Copilot is still safe regarding company data. Also paste of screens and insertion of attachment has gone. All those features work through web access or trough copilot application.

As another person has stated, is this the end of the Windows Copilot capability? Such as Copilot being able to enable dark mode on behalf of the user? This worked through the Copilot (Preview) sidebar. After installing the preview patch, neither the Copilot app (web experience) or Microsoft 365 app have access to the Windows integration. It will only print instructions for the user to follow.

To whoever is responsible for this change, I urge you to reconsider the rollout of this in its current state, the user experience change is awful and not intuitive.
Accessing Copilot should be facilitated through an app called \"Copilot\" not \"Microsoft 365 (Office)\" as its not intuitive, additionally pressing the \"Copilot\" key on a keyboard which has this button continues to launch the Copilot app which doesn't support work accounts, there is no ability to remap this key to the Microsoft 365 (Office) app.
This change needs a rework before it goes live.
You state \"users logging in with an Entra account will soon be redirected to the browser experience of Microsoft Copilot with EDP\" - When you say \"soon\" is this prior to the go-live for this change? Because if it isn't I think it would be wise to put a pause on this change.
Removing the Copilot icon from the taskbar, recommending that we then pin the Microsoft 365 (Office) app to the taskbar, only to later reintroduce work account support to the Copilot app, which then would require us to unpin the Microsoft 365 (Office) app and then pin the new Copilot app just doesn't make sense..

Reanne_Wong I wanted to give myself some time to digest this before I stated my opinion in case it changed, but it hasn't. I really think it's a step backward to have the Copilot app redirect to the web browser. Having a standalone app has really improved our users' perception of Copilot, and understanding of what it is, and thus usage. That makes me happy, because the ultimate goal in IT is to make users more efficient. Before the standalone app, we had a shortcut to the Copilot web application, but it wasn't utilized much. With this change, Copilot is becoming just another browser tab, rather than a standalone application. For more technical users, this doesn't matter because they/we can just rearrange windows to fit our workflow. But many users are not technical. There's something about the concept of a separate app that users love, that really distinguishes the app from just another website. This change is the opposite of \"Easy access for optimal productivity\".

and since you'll be accessing from the M365 app which is essentially just the web client anyways, does that mean that Copilot will no longer have or be worked on to interact with Windows itself? That functionality is just being scrapped?
