Editor's note: This blog post was first published February 24 , 2021 and updated with new information March 5 and March 10.

As announced February 24, the team began delivering the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update to first-generation Surface Hub 55” and 84” devices. We will continue to provide the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update to all first-generation Surface Hub devices as a staged rollout. Using a staged rollout allows our engineers to investigate issues as they arise and ensure the highest quality update experience.

In response to recent customer feedback, we throttled the March 2 rollout to investigate an issue listed in the known issues list. We also released a fix (KB5000749) as a prerequisite to receive the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update. This update repairs a condition that might result in an unbootable state when you upgrade Surface Hub devices to Windows 10 Team 2020 Update.

summarized rollout timeline is here:

Date Action Regions

  • KB5000749 installed.
  • Includes devices without full telemetry enabled.
Worldwide

We will continue to provide updates as the rollout continues. If you would like to start your Surface Hub v1 feature update before it is offered via Windows Update, we encourage you to use the Surface Hub Recovery Tool. Instructions are provided below.

Note: If the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update does not appear in the list of available Windows Updates, you can temporarily turn on full telemetry (aka Windows diagnostics). After enabling full telemetry and restarting the device, it may take 24 hours or more before the update appears. To check, open the Settings app from the Start menu, login with an administrator account, and select Updates & Security > Check for updates.

Updating via Surface Hub Recovery Tool

As an alternative to Windows Update, all first-generation Surface Hub devices can be updated from Windows 10 Team, version 1703 (RS2) to the new Windows 10 Team 2020 Update with the Surface Hub Recovery Tool (SHRT) available for download (select SurfaceHub_Recovery_v2.7.139.0.msi). When you run the SHRT tool, you will be prompted to select the 2020 Update image - aka 20H2 - as shown in the following screenshot:

For more information about using the SHRT tool including step-by-step instructions, refer to Using the Surface Hub Recovery Tool.

Is it just me or is the Windows Store now missing from the Windows 10 Team after the update for the Surface Hubs?

  • 20H2 is starting to hit our devices.  We're at about 80% upgraded.  We've also used the SHRT tool to upgrade with success.

Question:  When will the new Edge get pushed and be part of the SHRT image?  I know we can install it today with Intune, but will it eventually be pushed by Microsoft at some point?

    Hi Jermey

Is this surface hub recovery tool is still available?

I tried to download it but it seems like it has been taken off!

Any idea, where to get surface hub recovery tool now?

    thanks,

    G2

I can confirm the recovery tool worked a treat! I also deployed the new Edge provisioning package. Very happy with how my Surface Hub v1 is working now 🙂

  • Hi yoabar,

none of our V1 and V2 devices have received the 2020 update yet. Latest OS build is 10.0.15063.2679
When I´m checking for updates on the device, there`s no Update available. (Your device is up to date)
Full Telemetry is on, we do not use WSUS.

Do you have an idea what we can do? I`m afraid to reinstall over 50 devices worldwide with the recovery tool. 🙂

    thanks in advance
    Jens

All 5 of our early version Surface Hub v1 took an update on 3/31 and all cannot join teams meetings now.  It’s just a circle showing that it is trying to join forever.

I believe they all picked up 20H2 in mid March and were working fine with hosting and joining meetings.

we did cloud recovery on one to 20h2 and it still exhibits the same problems.

yoabar, I got one to update so far to see how it went before I roll it out. I even got the new Edge installed. I did have an issue in that I checked for updates and there were some but it erred and rolled back those updates but still on the new version.
