5-year commercial protection plans expand to additional markets

Many organizations are looking to keep devices in service longer, which can benefit from protection options that align with their deployment and refresh strategies. For example, in Microsoft Surface–commissioned UK research, 74% of surveyed IT decision-makers said they were looking to extend device lifecycles beyond three years.

As of October 1, 2026, Microsoft has expanded 5-year commercial protection plan options for eligible Surface devices to additional commercial markets. The expanded availability gives organizations more flexibility to align purchased protection with their device lifecycle strategy. Eligible customers can now select a 5-year term for the following base protection plans: 

• Microsoft Extended Hardware Service, which provides extended coverage for mechanical breakdowns. 

• Microsoft Complete for Business, which provides unlimited mechanical breakdown coverage as well as coverage for battery wear and accidental damage from handling.

Whether your organization is supporting employees in one location or managing a distributed device fleet, predictable lifecycle planning can help simplify IT operations. A 5-year protection term can align coverage more closely with longer deployment schedules, potentially helping to reduce coverage gaps and make support costs more predictable.

They can help you review availability, device eligibility, ordering details, coverage, exclusions, and the applicable terms and conditions for your market. Commercial customers using Surface Management Portal on Intune admin center will be able to submit a request for 5-year protection plans for eligible Surface devices directly through the portal soon.
