SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 21 is now generally available (GA)
I've disabled the installer a couple of times before I realised I'd actually downloaded the right thing! Downloading SSMS and seeing the Visual Studio Installer open is very confusing. Could it be any more confusing?

mikimauz Within this post, the first bullet under Highlights says "Installation and automatic updates via the Visual Studio Installer". It's also covered in the installation documentation. If you have a suggestion about how to better clarify that the Visual Studio Installer is used to install SSMS, please share it. Thanks!

It's confusing to download SSMS and suddenly see the Visual Studio Installer launch. I didn’t intend to install Visual Studio. 🙂
A simple splash screen or message explaining that SSMS now uses the Visual Studio Installer as a platform would really help clarify things before the installer opens.- erinstellatoAug 07, 2025

mikimauz I understand the confusion. The Visual Studio Installer is a separate, stand-alone application; it is not Visual Studio. However, because the Visual Studio Installer is responsible for installing other applications, making a change to add a notification message just for SSMS is a lower priority compared to other updates/fixes required. We did update the branding where possible to distinguish between SSMS and VS, and we've tried to talk about the Visual Studio Installer as much as possible in blog posts, documentation, etc.
