The SSMS has been around for more than 20 years, yet the Result Pane still lacks some basic and much-needed functionality.
The Query Editor and Result Pane are among the most frequently used features in SSMS. One feature I have always missed is the ability to display result aggregates—such as Sum, Min, Max, Average, Non-Null Count, and Null Count—for an entire column/row or for a selected region of the result set.
This is a very basic and useful capability for quickly analyzing query results. I’m surprised that, after all these years, SSMS still doesn’t provide this functionality. Does the SSMS development team really need a feature request and community votes before considering such a fundamental usability improvement?
Consider Microsoft Excel: the status bar immediately shows useful aggregates such as Sum, Average, and Count when you select a range of cells. Without that functionality, users would have to manually add formulas every time they wanted to perform such a simple analysis, making Excel considerably less productive.
Many third-party SQL editors already provide similar result aggregates directly in the result/status area. It would be great to see SSMS offer this by default, without requiring users to install extensions or rely on workarounds.
This may seem like a small feature, but for anyone who works with query results frequently, it would be a significant productivity and usability improvement. I strongly encourage the SSMS team to consider adding result aggregates to the Result Pane.
Looking forward to see this value addition productive feature incorporated in the near future upcoming release.
