I completely agree with hst_de . All those efforts in renewing the start experience, while users mostly don't care (or know) about it. They just want to go to the Homesite when they click on either the logo of our company or the SharePoint text.
I do understand that Microsoft wants to have the SharePoint-branding visible in the top, but from a org./user perspective it would be better if the SharePoint text would be open to be customized. Meaning not only the link but also the text. In such a way that you can choose to display your own name (next to your logo) or let it lead to your own link.
For the current page; jow many people actually create sites or news posts? I am sure sites are even far less created than news posts. Not only due to sites are not needed in the same amount as news posts, but also because not everybody has rights to do so. The rest of the page consists of stuff people don't feel the urge for to go to this page, because there is an app bar for them too. News is available through the homesites and/or various other sites (plus the app bar).
Basically the page is confusing and has no real usecase scenario for most. Cut short, the current page almost looks like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
