Build on your DevOps expertise with the new Microsoft Certified: Agentic DevOps Engineer Expert certification and Exam AZ-401, now in beta.

Agentic AI is transforming how DevOps teams ship software. The professionals who can weave AI assistance into continuous integration, delivery, and monitoring are the ones driving real operational impact.

Ready to prove you can design and run agentic DevOps at scale? We're introducing the Microsoft Certified: Agentic DevOps Engineer Expert certification to validate your ability to deliver continuous value with AI-assisted DevOps across Azure DevOps and GitHub, using GitHub Copilot. Earn it by passing Exam AZ-401 Designing and Implementing Microsoft Agentic DevOps Solutions, now in beta.

To earn the expert Microsoft Certified: Agentic DevOps Engineer Expert certification, you must also pass one of these two exams

Is this the right certification for you?

This certification is designed for agentic DevOps engineers—developers or infrastructure administrators who bring people, processes, and products together to enable continuous delivery of value, and who enhance DevOps processes by integrating AI assistance tools. You collaborate with developers, site reliability engineers, platform engineers, Azure administrators, and security engineers.

This certification demonstrates your ability to:

  • Design and implement processes, traceability, and DevOps success metrics.
  • Build source control strategies across Azure DevOps and GitHub.
  • Design and implement build, release, and deployment pipelines with AI assistance.
  • Apply security, compliance, and instrumentation strategies using AI agents.

You should have strong skills in either administering or developing solutions using Microsoft technologies, plus practical experience with DevOps code languages including YAML, KQL, and Bicep. You should also have experience implementing both Azure DevOps and GitHub solutions using Microsoft and GitHub AI tools.

  • Is Agentic DevOps part of DevOps, or is DevOps now part of Agentic DevOps? 🤔

I always thought DevOps was the broader concept, with AI and agents simply being additional tools to improve existing practices. Maybe I'm missing something.

As someone who already holds the Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert certification, I'd appreciate a free transition assessment for existing certification holders rather than potentially having to pay for two additional exams covering largely overlapping skills.

Especially considering that Microsoft is retiring the existing DevOps Engineer Expert certification in February 2027.

At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow we see Microsoft Certified: Agentic AI Network Engineer. 🙂

Seriously, where does meaningful specialization end and marketing begin?

A bit annoyed with this one, as I did a lot of checking around retirements before passing the exam last month. At least with my AZ-204, I managed to squeeze a last renewal in.

It would be nice if there was a shorter transition track for AZ-400 holders as I'm sure this will be 70% the same with a sprinkle of AI.

Agreed - 400 could have remained and AI placed into it - but they want to sell you another exam. It will be testing you on pointless skills too like having to memorise licensing options for Copilot and the Microsoft's six principals of AI - everything you need to prove you can DevOps :/

Guys! I just passed AZ-400 on October 17, 2026, with 918, after researching whether the exam would be replaced. Only to discover that Microsoft had announced AZ-401, with AZ-400 retiring in February 2027.

AZ-204 (retired some months ago) was one of the two prerequisite for AZ-400, even though it wasn't clear, we could say that there were signs that the 400 was about to change.

So the only self-paced learning option is currently the one linked above called "Optimize DevOps with AI agents on Azure" which has the tagline topline of "This learning path shows how to integrate AI-powered agents into your Azure DevOps workflows." - I'm confused about the direction of travel it's taking here - AZ-400 was clearly getting more and more focused on GitHub and now we are going BACK to Azure DevOps for the majority of this one??? Confused

Beta exams often do not have any training content; Optimize DevOps with AI agents on Azure is the only learning path available so far.

Does that mean the AZ-400 will be replaced? If so, I don't think it is a good idea.

With this release, Exam AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions and  Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert will retire on February 1, 2027.

      Yes, it will be.

Question is, will they do like they did with SC-500 and AZ-500 and basically keep the AZ-500 stuff in there and add some agentic topics, or is all the content brand new. And if they just add some content, why not make a AZ-40x like they did with AZ-30x and AZ-10x originally.

      • The study guide is out so you can make that comparison yourself between the exams rather than speculate.
