Configure any Azure Boards item to work inside Project Roadmap

Should roadmap show any item in the 'update items' dialogue? I recently found this feature. I added myself (as owner) and selected the devops org and project OK, but no items are returned when I search. The process I am using for boards/devops is CMMI. I have epics/features/reqs various applicable types that have start date and target date. Is there a schedule this is run on?
