Why did Microsoft remove essential functionality?

"This announcement does not impact any existing user scenarios or functionality of Microsoft To Do apps."
And that's not true: so this new version does!
The old version(s) were much better than this "minimal Planner" and To Do version(s). This is very disappointing, in my opinion Microsoft is doing this for the money and without realizing the impact of the change on essential functionality that is used within multiple plans for the current users.
Your slogan "The new Planner is simple", is not true in any way. The new Planner has become unusable in a large number of ways! It's a bummer!
