You can disable the new location on the left to classic allready 😊got implemented several patches ago.
- go to file -> options - andvanced
- and toggle off the "Show Apps in Outlook" (or something similiar), it's in the top area
- restart Outlook
I just noticed that there is a toggle switch at the top right of the screen. It was the "New Outlook". I toggled it off. A feedback block came up, I gave some feedback. Outlook closed. I reopened it, and the toggle switch is back to "New Outlook". I did it again, New Outlook opened again. Unbelievable.
What version do you have? In Microsoft® Outlook® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2412 Build 16.0.18324.20092) 64-bit, there is no option like Show apps in Outlook on the Advanced tab.

When I downloaded it, it asked if I wanted the "New Outlook" and I hit the no button--I think the other option was the "classic" outlook.

I have the same build number - check again see picture. You don't have this option?
This opens the Outlook Options, Advanced tab where you can uncheck Show Apps in Outlook, then restart Outlook to return to the classic navigation bar.
Thank you for the quick and helpful response. I was not seeing the check box because my brain insisted that the setting could not be part of the Outlook panes group since the space-wasting thing is a sidebar, not a pane.
TMI: In the late '90s and early '00s, I wrote and edited training and marketing things about MSFT products and we relied on the good old Mikey Style Guide for Technical Publications. That very well composed style guide began dying an undignified death as Microsoft abandoned its standards for stable, consistent, clearly named UI elements.
