The truth is that it's possible Search was working before I even made the changes to begin with. I didn't test as I was still trying to get my head around what we were talking about here. (It's been a couple of days of mind-warping tech topics or marathon sessions on things that should be easy. For example, I started working on getting a domain transfer setup at 9am this morning. I stopped at 1230pm. I am dumb, but not that dumb.)
Just to be clear on what I did:
1. I used the link Gabe_Bratton provided. I logged in with the same email address that is my work email account at Intermedia.
2. I saw my work email in there.
3. I created an alias on outlook.com.
4. I made that my primary.
5. I logged back into the same site with the outlook.com email address.
6. I removed the one referencing my work email address.
After that I tested search and it worked right away. But, as I said, I didn't test beforehand. I am sorry about that.
So, what I have right now is:
1. Office 365 app subscription (not Exchange) activated against my personal email address.
2. Work email address added to Outlook.
3. An outlook.com MSA account.
I just opened OneNote because I remembered that I use my work email address in there to sync a notebook. That has now magically switched over to my outlook.com address.
I have a better understanding on what Gabe was saying to begin with. I haven't really grokked the implications of what this will mean for a client that doesn't want to use an outlook.com account at all. I'll do some shrugging exercises today.
