DBurkhanaev I get that, but Microsoft also have said they are aware of the gaps between modern and COM add-ins and were working to address them. I certainly may have missed it, but it seems to be radio silence since then on the issue. The push is beginning, so that silence is getting ever louder.
I hear you on win32 native vs. web wrapper software, but I don't have a problem with PWAs or the like--as long as it doesn't result in unacceptable tradeoffs like this. I'm all-in for an Outlook that doesn't require matrix testing of COM add-in compatibility for each new version of Outlook, add-in, or both. Modern add-ins promise that--that's fantastic. But the ability to update the add-ins without breaking things is pointless if the add-ins can't provide the very functionality that made you add them in the first place. When it comes to add-ins, new Outlook is like a new car that fills its own gas tank and changes its own tires and oil, but no longer has an engine. Cool feature, but not if it's at the expense of its very reason to exist.
