I would have to go and find the blog post from Microsoft, but COM Add-in support is changing. Only web add-ins are going to be supported moving forward.
You have to remember that Teams is mostly webcode and New Outlook is largely webcode. Microsoft only wants to support tech that integrates well with that. It’s seems for now, until the fad changes, web flavored code is the standard they are going to follow. It sucks. It’s weak. You should get native software when paying a subscription. But it seems that webcode and software as a service go hand in hand.
I think the whole model sucks and that a company should never get paid premium prices for a lazy effort and you should be able to buy something and have the rights to use it without being nickeled and dimed to death. But everyone seems to be okay letting these people get away with it.
TLDR; com add ins are not being supported going forward, only web add ins.
