And I confirmed that it has nothing to do with the ownership of the directory containing the sync root: in fact, if I chown that directory to 99:99 before setting up OneDrive, OD then chowns it back so that it's owned by me when I select it on first startup, as long as the volume has ownership enabled. I'll bet it's simply that AFP refuses to sync on a volume that has ownership disabled - I don't think this is a trick at all. This is probably documented somewhere in the developer documentation, and I'll bet someone on the OneDrive team knows this, but never considered this case important enough to document for end users. And maybe they're right, since if you're going to put your home directory somewhere, you sure as heck want the OS to enforce ownership and permissions there. If anyone other than myself is to blame, it's Apple for making the Ignore Ownership setting the default when formatting an external volume.
