This fiasco has prompted me to look into other solutions as OneDrive is unusable for my purposes now (I pretty much always want local copies). After some searching (not a fan of Dropbox and similar) I'm trialing Tresorit now and it seems really good, especially as it is much more privacy-focused (which is my strong preference anyway) and is quite simple to ensure that what you upload stays sync'd on your computer. It will take the place of both OneDrive and SpiderOak ONE for me. As a lawyer, I like the privacy/security focus of Tresorit. For that matter, from my lawyer perspective, I can't imagine why some class action lawyer may not want to take up this fiasco as a case - Microsoft unilaterally and without permission deleting files from your computer? Stunning failure. Someone at Microsoft does deserve to get fired for this. It is an epic fail.
