I have got my 2 systems (old tower PC, and new mobile portable device one being setup to replace the old one!)
to the point where I have installed the new app on them, and now unlinked the folder added to my systems and the MFT from the OneDrive cloud on both.
(after 3 attempts ad the uninstall, got the App "uninstalled" from the slower system.
Disabled the start at system user session login, and will be removing the folder from both.
Note that as "I" am the "organiser, and the administrator of the "Family" subscription, and consequently have access to all the 6 users 1TB allocation, the "install" set links on my system to all the files on the 6TB of storage.
causing the I7 laptop to show a black screen for a while, and then be very slow to respond as it then kept reporting it was linking in a number of files, and then that it had completed that, and then was linking in another set of files.
The slower system just stopped responding to any input - mouse or keyboard leaving me thinking the OS was broken.
I have discussed the problems with MS support staff, and amongst other advice - got told to turn off the link to the OneDrive store - but the system is set so that you do not see that option if you have paused the linking process.
Also, I was told that there are options to not "Sync" the OneDrive storage to the PC -
- Agreed there are options, but the options are not accessible until the linking has completed
Luckily I have a fair numbers of years experience in IT - and did not remove the list of files from the PC, test actins showing that deleting an entry from the folder integrated into the MFT on my system would delete the file on the OneDrive cloud -
And as some users were using the facility for backup and archive storage, tat would have upset them, and I am not even considering the response from the users who had set their entire OS partition to be "Synced" to the cloud content -
you know, the sort of thing you would do if running on a home tower system, and a mobile - college use laptop.
As the MS windows, MS365, and MS EDGE software seem to be set to assume the users want to have their multiple devices set to be a consolidated working environment.
In summary-
The design of the new App has made a facility that seems intended to be a help for users has made it into a danger to the users, starting with a "panic now" mode as the install process runs, and then the integration process runs, - followed by a destruction of the backup type processes the user had setup for their use of the OneDrive facility.
I will be reverting to the old processes, even with the deficiencies in their processes such as only showing the start of filenames, and not always showing all the files in a OneDrive folder, and not giving the option of view file size & timestamp, and select either the new or old file, or keep both files when uploading a file with the name of a file already on the store ( see File explorer copy and move action options with the scrollable filenames).
Ideally, I would have liked to see the ability to assign a partition letter to a OneDrive "user" folder set, and have that letter removed, and reassigned as my activities indicate is appropriate -
The access to be set as either write enabled, or default to read only to that the entries are not integrated into the MFT on my systems OS partition, and I can monitor usage in read-only mode, and set write permissions when I want undertake "ORGANISER" activities.
With the concept that the OneDrive facility is ideally to be integrated into the OS use, -
Then maybe holding a list of the stored folders and files on the local PC is appropriate, but not integrated into the MFT of the partition!
Rather better to be accessed as an "ORGANISER" via an "ORGANISER" permissions selection panel
Also - maybe have the subscription "owner" required to be a separate id from all of the authorised users of the 365 "family" subscription !
