Today at the Microsoft 365 Community Conference, we announced the next generation of sharing for Microsoft 365. Not just an experience refresh, this year we are improving the underlying model that en...
Hi Maarten, generally speaking, if it works today with sharing links, it should continue to work for hero links. Sharing links today continue to work even after rename & move operations within the same site and hero links are expected to work the same way. More to share as we get closer!
StephenRice I have just tested this today in SharePoint and renamed files are not accessible through the links. Steps to reproduce:
Created a text file with one line of text and gave it the filename 2025-11-20-0844-test.txt
uploaded to a SharePoint site and then shared with a colleague in the usual way
Colleague opened the text file and then edited it by adding a new line of text
I then went to the SharePoint site and renamed the file to 2025-11-20-0847-test.txt
Colleague again clicked the link and received the message 404 error File not found
Conclusion is that today, links do not persist through file renames.
if you know the new filename, you can edit the URL in the browser and then the file will load.
So I would suggest that you need to create this new Hero link in such a way that they do in fact persist through file renames - maybe that is some sort of hash value or another primary key.
