Coming off a great Ignite week, here are the latest updates to the OneDrive service this month! If you want to see the full list of announcements, head over to the official Ignite post to learn more! This month we’re releasing Mac Files On-Demand, Dark Mode for OneDrive on Mac, Files On-Demand and Storage Sense, and link open receipts for sharing links. Continue reading for more details!

Mac Files On-Demand

Begins rolling out to customers now

Releasing to Office Insiders today, Files On-Demand for Mac makes it easy to have access to all your files, but only have files you need to be stored locally on the device which reduces the amount of storage space consumed. You don‘t have to change the way you work, because all your files can be seen in Finder and work just like every other file on your device. Files On-Demand is available to consumer and commercial OneDrive customers, and works across all your personal, work, and shared files in Office 365. Visit our support page to learn how to enable this. Files On-Demand for Mac will be publicly available in the coming months.

Dark Mode support for Mac

Begins rolling out to customers now

Dark Mode is a dramatic new look that helps you focus on your work in MacOS Mojave. Dark Mode works with built-in apps that come with the Mac and is now fully supported in OneDrive for Mac. When Dark Mode is enabled, OneDrive will switch to a new gorgeous dark theme across all of the UI (such as Finder Overlays, and the OneDrive Activity Center,) to ensure a cohesive experience.

Files On-Demand and Storage Sense Integration

Begins rolling out to customers now

With Windows 10 October 2018 update Windows Storage Sense now has the capability to automatically free up disk space by making older, unused, locally available OneDrive files be available online-only. Your files will still be safe in OneDrive and represented as placeholders on your device. Your online-only files will still be visible on your device. When connected to the internet, you’ll be able to use online-only files just like any other file. You can learn more about this new functionality here.

Link Open Receipts

Begins rolling out to customers this month

When you share a file in the OneDrive web experience using the “Quick Send” capability, you will have peace of mind knowing when someone engages with your file for the first time. OneDrive will send you a Link Open receipt to notify you that your link was clicked on. Link Open receipts will begin rolling out in early October.

Thanks for the quick response StephenRice ! Is the rollout for this feature complete? Is there anything that I have to explicitly enable at the admin level? Does it apply only to specific sharing scenarios (e.g. outside the organization). I tested this with internal users and am not seeing it.

  • Hi nitincsh ,

Quick Send is what we call the blue "Send" button in the sharing dialogue. We use this name because all the user needs to do is enter an e-mail address and then click send (vs. copy link which requires the link to be sent in a different messaging client or Outlook which opens up a full Outlook compose window). Thanks!

Maybe I see it but don't know it's name ....but what's the "Quick send" capability? When I share a file with a colleague and they click on the link via email, I am not getting the open receipt.

  • Hi Sarah Stillings,

Currently there is not a place to turn the notifications back on but this is something the team is looking at. Thanks!

Where can you manage the Link Open Receipt notification settings? I clicked the "unsubscribe" link from a sample receipt email and it just sends me to a screen confirming I've unsubscribed -- I don't see anywhere to turn the notifications back on/off. Thanks!

  • Hi wroot,

Before the new notifications listed above, we did have some sharing notifications around very specific scenarios such as "Another user created an anyone link to one of your files". We did have an "invitation acceptance" notification that is tied to the legacy sharing invitation model (which is why you no longer get it). In any case, This new notification will cover many more scenarios and should be much more useful!

When we first started using OneDrive in beginning of 2017 i think i remember OneDrive sending similar emails when someone first time accessed files. It also sent an email saying that you have shared something, i think. At some point it stopped sending anything. A notification is a welcome thing.
