Judging by the use of my ssd, all files were in the cache but...
- Not all could be linked, I got various error messages
- The link could only be made when connected to the internet
In the end, I had to remove everything, use a Windows computer to transfer the files from OneDrive to Google Drive (Dropbox would have been better still but I use that for another job exclusively), then clean out OneDrive entirely and now I use it for a couple of folders I share with colleagues. It's hard to tell whether your files will still be accessible the next day, but this is how I limit the problem.
Microsoft has really done the worst possible job. It is frustrating, as they don't seem to realise peoples careers and studies are at stake. Some people, including myself, really can't afford to lose three workdays just to get access to their files again. That is NOT "99.9% uptime". You'd need about ten years of flawless service to get to that ratio.
Now I don't have any expectation of this company. My takeaway is that Windows computers are preferred by IT departments to secure their jobs fixing problems, simply by introducing confusing novelties, and ignoring practical use cases.
