OneDrive is excited to launch the Open in App feature, a game-changer for those who prefer working directly in native applications.
Until now, only Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files could be opened in their native desktop applications; other file types like PDFs, JPEGs, or MP4s would open in a preview mode where you would be able to view but not edit the file. We’ve heard your feedback around wanting a more seamless workflow, directly accessing and editing all of your files in their dedicated apps, not just Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Open in App makes this possible.
Now, while working with OneDrive or SharePoint in a browser, or the latest version of Teams, you can open files directly in their native applications. You can edit as needed, and then be assured that your changes will be saved right back to the cloud, maintaining a smooth and efficient workflow.
Effortlessly open and edit files in their native apps
Using the new Open in App experience is simple. Imagine you’re in your favorite browser, using your Microsoft work or school account. In the My files view in OneDrive or a SharePoint document library, right-click on a file, then select Open > Open in app. The file will open in its native app, directly from your browser. You get the benefit of full functionality, allowing you to access the complete set of features and tools that the application offers.

Using Open in App in Microsoft Teams
This seamless experience isn’t just for your browser. It also works with the latest version of Teams. To open your OneDrive files in their native apps from Teams, navigate to the My files view, right-click on a file and select Open > Open in app.

Choosing default apps
If there is a default app available to open the file, then the Open in app option automatically chooses that app to open your file. When a default app is not configured, the system will ask you to select a default app, giving you the flexibility to configure specific default apps for different file types. Once opened, you can make and save changes to a file in the desktop app, and any changes you save will sync back to OneDrive or SharePoint.

Availability and requirements
Open in app is currently rolling out to work and school accounts on Windows and macOS devices that have the OneDrive sync client installed. If the sync client is installed but not running, selecting Open in app will start the client. You will also need to have the desired native desktop applications installed on your PC or Mac. For SharePoint sites, you will need to enable Offline Client Availability. This feature is not yet available for personal accounts or on other operating systems. Learn more.

kaylangan could you explain more about it. Where is it exactly "offline client availability" option? Is it part of onedrive, or browser setting. FYI i use macbook pro machine with latest O/S X.

I enjoy working office documents (excel) from onedrive. However, since two days ago, "open / in apps" menu disappeared. I only have one choice in my browser (safari) "opan / in excel online". After that i may open to desktop version (more steps), i wonder anyone here can solve my problem.
Essentially, you can hide this feature via the view setting by 'Formatting view' and adding JSON.
This should be a sufficient solution if users on the site have visitor access.
If users have edit access, you'll have to take additional steps as they will be able to create new views with the Sync button visible.
You can create an additional permission class copying all the features of Edit except at the bottom of the page in the view tab, you can limit users ability to create new views there. You can name this new access type as Edit - No views, or something to that effect to limit confusion down the line.
That's what we did before for users who required Offline Availability but did not have access (or rather we didn't want them to have access to) Sync library.

You're correct, the feature itself is still active because it needs to be for 'Open in App' to work. Open in App requires, 1. a OneDrive account, and 2. Offline Availability enabled, and these are non-negociable from the discussions we've had. We have also hidden the 'Add Shortcut to OneDrive' feature accross our tenant for the same reason as library sync (user error could be catastrophic). Script below should sort this,

While we're not disabling the features, as we would ideally like to, we can hide the ability for users to perform these actions, which is what we're currently doing.
We only began testing this this week and haven't tested it on a live site yet, however all tests on our test sites have been positive providing the prerequisites were met.
RE future of syncing, the last couple of Office Hours I've been to I've seen this question posed, and each time the OD team have stated that they look to be committed to going forward with Syncing (currently investing a lot of time and money into it), so I'm not sure what to think on that one.
We had turned off Shortcuts to OneDrive at a tenant level a while back as we didn't believe the safeguards were in place at that point. Recently this was addressed with an additional warning screen if you are about to permenantly delete material, so this may have to be tested again as a viable option going forward.
CCChris_Martin , I think this only hides the sync button but doesn't deactivate the feature itself in the sense that "Add shortcut to OneDrive" is still there and does about the same thing in the background. The reasoning is that the sync button will some day go away because MS recommends using only OneDrive shortcuts instead.
To really disable the sync engine, this needs to be set at the library or site settings-level, but that also breaks the "open in app" feature.

Tested Open in app with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint files, which didn't start the OD client and could save directly to the SP doc lib without running OD.

You can hide the sync button for individual libraries but not using the above method.
Essentially, you can hide this feature via the view setting by 'Formatting view' and adding JSON.
This should be a sufficient solution if users on the site have visitor access.
If users have edit access, you'll have to take additional steps as they will be able to create new views with the Sync button visible.
You can create an additional permission class copying all the features of Edit except at the bottom of the page in the view tab, you can limit users ability to create new views there. You can name this new access type as Edit - No views, or something to that effect to limit confusion down the line.
That's what we did before for users who required Offline Availability but did not have access (or rather we didn't want them to have access to) Sync library.

You're correct, the feature itself is still active because it needs to be for 'Open in App' to work. Open in App requires, 1. a OneDrive account, and 2. Offline Availability enabled, and these are non-negociable from the discussions we've had. We have also hidden the 'Add Shortcut to OneDrive' feature accross our tenant for the same reason as library sync (user error could be catastrophic). Script below should sort this,

While we're not disabling the features, as we would ideally like to, we can hide the ability for users to perform these actions, which is what we're currently doing.
We only began testing this this week and haven't tested it on a live site yet, however all tests on our test sites have been positive providing the prerequisites were met.
RE future of syncing, the last couple of Office Hours I've been to I've seen this question posed, and each time the OD team have stated that they look to be committed to going forward with Syncing (currently investing a lot of time and money into it), so I'm not sure what to think on that one.
We had turned off Shortcuts to OneDrive at a tenant level a while back as we didn't believe the safeguards were in place at that point. Recently this was addressed with an additional warning screen if you are about to permenantly delete material, so this may have to be tested again as a viable option going forward.

CCChris_Martin , I think this only hides the sync button but doesn't deactivate the feature itself in the sense that \"Add shortcut to OneDrive\" is still there and does about the same thing in the background. The reasoning is that the sync button will some day go away because MS recommends using only OneDrive shortcuts instead.
To really disable the sync engine, this needs to be set at the library or site settings-level, but that also breaks the \"open in app\" feature.
