Although many organizations are increasing efforts to go paperless, the need to print documents remains a critical part of the workflow. Earlier this year we introduced Universal Print, which helped organizations simplify print management by moving it to the cloud. With Universal Print, administrators can reduce or eliminate on-premises print infrastructure and move their organizations to a serverless printing infrastructure.

Now people across the organization can access a printer in the cloud from anywhere with an internet connection and securely print over Zero Trust Networks without the need for a VPN connection to their organization’s network.

Roadmap ID : 82099

Cloud printing is the first step in improving people’s print experience.

Before Universal Print, an IT admin or device owner had to install a printer on the  device so they could use it to print documents. In a large organization where people often have multiple devices and use multiple printers, this experience can range from inconvenient to completely unmanageable.

Universal Print integration with OneDrive on the web will solve this problem by enabling people to print documents hosted in OneDrive directly to a printer in their organization without needing to install any printers on their devices.

People can select a document and click Print . They see a print dialog where they can search for and select any printer in their organization they have access to, regardless of whether it’s installed on the device they are using. What’s more, people will have the same print experience across all browsers and devices.

If people want to print to a local printer installed on their device, they can click Select a local printer instead on the print dialog, which opens the browser’s print UI so they can select a local printer.

Supported file types are PDF, XPS, as well as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint . We will continue to add support for more file types. Let us know what file types are important to you at https://aka.ms/UPIdeas.

The new experience will be available later this week and is supported on all browsers across different operating systems and device types. Please try it and share your feedback on the Universal Print Tech Community

Thanks,

Wouldn't it be more useful to fix the multiple bugs, e.g. the inability of OneDrive to synch in real time BEFORE you start adding additional functionality to a broken product?

  • The feature is currently rolling out.

Deleted, thanks for pointing out that the Roadmap entry is still set to "In development". We're fixing that.

As of today, not seeing a print option when selecting a PDF file in OneDrive web. Is there a setting to enable it at the tenant level or is this another case of MS jumping the gun with a new feature that hasn't rolled out fully yet? We are on a UK tenant. Thanks. Alex.
