I am wondering if some manufacturers can address this issue with a firmware update rather than a physical change.

    Unfortunately, in many cases (USB4, USB-PD etc.) support requires hardware born on to the device before it ships. Fortunately, our intention with these requirements is to create a consistent experience before a laptop reaches the store shelf.
