With the slow roll out of a robust tag functionality, I am experimenting with abandoning ONW10 as a productivity system and keeping all tags in Outlook. I have a higher confidence in search remaining a strong in Outlook than in the prospects of OneNote being properly refitted. Tag search has always been weak in ON compared to other products in this space.
I had decided a long time ago to only use tags for time-based reminders (today, next week, etc.) and rely on key words for calling up notes based on actual content rather than key word tags.
For those familiar with GTD:
- CAPTURE
- ON16: All information went into ON: Quick Notes
- It's not clear yet what direction SendTo will take. Right now, it is a separate app that allows 'printing' to ONW10.
- ONW10: all information comes into Outlook.
- CLARIFY
- ON16: Provided details, including identifying actions in ON:Quick Notes
- Although there are To Do tags, they cannot be searched yet, let alone being able to find open actions.
- ONW10: Flag actions in Outlook.
- ORGANIZE
- ON16: Once processed, it went to a different section, ON:Archive
- With the sliding panes, it is more difficult to drag and drop between sections.
- ONW10: organized and flagged Outlook items go to searchable archive.
- REFLECT
- ON16: ON:Tag searches in OneNote dug items out of the archive when time to do them
- Without Tag search, the heart of the system stops beating.
- ONW10: Use various views in OL:Tasks to percolate items to the top based on start and due dates.
- ENGAGE
- ON16: As I performed tasks, more detail was added, along with any new action ON:Tags.
- Now ONW10 serves as simply a text-searchable notes archive.
- ONW10: Any new actions are re-created in OL:Tasks.
Maybe that can be of use to others who are currently using ON16 but have to come to grips with ONW10.
