The community has been begging them for that extra space to be returned ever since the UI update first went into Beta years ago. It could have been done better and should be improved... but it's really nowhere near as huge of a deal as y'all are making it out to be, lol.
Really? TBH I've never seen a single complaint anywhere about the old location of the search bar or the fact that a tiny sliver of horizontal screen space was taken up by the containing area. Furthermore, the real kicker is if you use horizontal tabs (which I do), that strip that used to contain the search bar is still there anyway (because it has to contain the horizontal tabs) - so in this case the "reclaimed space" is literally 0. The only way this "reclaims" any space is if you use vertical tabs, and even then - how much screen space did you really get back? A tiny amount.
However, the impact on workflow is significant. The tradeoff is the search box now overlaps a significant portion of long titles, as well as page content when expanded. And for right-to-left languages, it likely just made the product almost unusable. For reclaiming a tiny horizontal strip of screen space at best, or no gain whatsoever at worst. That's a terrible trade-off for user experience; this was not well thought-out at all. I am happy they are looking for ways to improve OneNote and are collecting feedback - that's great - but please, MS, think through these changes and test more thoroughly before rolling them out. They affect literally millions of users who then often have to wait months to get something fixed if it's overlooked, with no option to switch to the old UI in the meantime.
That depends how you use OneNote. For me, it is in the way of every single page I use. Resizing isn't an option, as it will cause the images to be skewed or harder to review.
The move isn't 'saving space' if the space it now occupies is in the way. Given the fact that you have the ability to scroll up and down with the wheel of your mouse, I am not sure how this is an improvement.
Or perhaps you haven't looked at all the use cases such a RTL (right to left) languages which this non-transparent search box exists. As just one example.
No need to revert back, but giving the option to move it and also the option to turn it off is a solution that pleases everyone. Surely you see that as a good thing.
I'll give you that, I did not think about that use case and can definitely see how it's a pain. And yes, I agree that an option should be available, which is what I said in a prior comment.
I'll be honest, I don't remember Alet's comment being the one I replied to... I thought it was RM, but anyways, I want to address what is annoying me about this comment section because you seem like you're going to respond to all my messages. By all means, lend a complaint - that's part of what the forum/comments are for. I like this update and think it's a great step in the right direction, but there's still work to be done for individuals greatly affected (and Tony has said they're working on it). But there are way too many comments just trashing the development team and being overtly rude, especially after MS ignored ON for YEARS and are now finally giving it attention (well, a few years now). We should work on how we provide constructive criticism and not piss off the few passionate devs that are there. Also, they are people - let's not talk to them like crap (digital Kare Kares). Providing an option will take time, especially when there are so many substantial UI options already in-place to consider the effect on. That's typically why several apps/software don't provide many (if any) options to change the UI in a significant way. Unfortunately, MS hasn't lent as many resources as they should have to the ON dev team in the past (never worked there, just have spoken with past devs), and I think that's still a problem, exacerbating the wait time.
