I use Comments as a way to add non-interactive Notes, to notate. If you hover over the New Comment button on the ribbon the pop-up says this: "Add a note about this part of the document." When I use Word, I am not adding or seeking comments. I am adding notes, almost like a parallel document, so a rich formatting capability of comments is important.
So, the Original Comments works better in many ways for me now because it supports more rich formatting now. But the Modern Comments Pane is nicer for me in Focus-mode with Office Dark Mode but I would like to shrink the margin around each comment in the Modern Comments Pane to just a few pixels and I would like to change the background color of the Modern Comments pane to black or . Being able to toggle between list and context view of the Modern Comments Pane is good.
Some more things i found:
- Shaded text and bookmark-indicators do not appear in Modern Comments. I have a lot of both (some is nested), and it does not warn you with the "Missing Content" message.
- A highlight within a highlight (e.g. green highlighted word within a yellow highlighted sentence) is not representing correctly.
- Ribbon navigation with keyboard is counter-intuitive to turn off both list and context view (for me : Alt R, P1, Escape, Enter).
- Yes, you can switch to the Revisions Pane as backup to see comment/formatting as it really is (i.e. Modern Comments cannot be trusted) but that defeats the purpose of dark mode support since the Revisions Pane, like Original Comments Pane, does not honor dark mode.
Wish I could have a hybrid of the two Comment Panes/features, or at least didn't have to restart Word to switch between the two.
OneNote has two versions and I run them both at the same time because they both have advantages and have not merged into one yet. But can't do that with Word that I am aware of.
