I wonder whether Microsoft could settle on a hybrid commenting system that combines the good parts of both Classic and Modern, with maybe only two choices for the user to make:
- whether to enforce posting (i.e. whether each new or edited comment needs to be posted or you can just move the cursor away from it)
- which view to use: the old one or the ‘List’ view (where the comments appear in a scrollable panel, which really can be useful) that was introduced as part of Modern Comments – I doubt that anyone would miss the ‘Consolidated’ view.
Whether posting is enforced or not, I think this system should allow you to start editing a comment by just moving your cursor into it, as in the old system – unless it’s someone else’s comment. (One of the lesser-mentioned things about Modern Comments is that you can’t edit someone else’s comment, which seems reasonable.)
It should allow all the formatting that the old system allows: font colours, superscripts, bullet lists etc. And I’m sure Microsoft could get rid of that ‘Start a conversation’ prompt without getting any complaints.
Does anyone agree? Have I missed something that would make this idea impractical?
