The August 9 update on this page said the following changes would be included in the October update. Modern Comments appeared in my Word set-up again this morning - my comments are in blue:
- Quick Edit: we will make it easier to enter edit mode for a comment such as showing the edit button on hover. I’m not seeing this.
- Ctrl+Enter & Cmd+Enter awareness: we will promote keyboard shortcut usage for post. OK, but not a real improvement for those who already knew we could do this.
- Comment anchor connection: we will make it easier to see what a comment is referring to. How? I can't see anything new.
- Tracked Changes: Show Revisions Inline: we will promote using the “Show All Revisions inline” setting to show track changes on the canvas instead of between the comments (see the FAQ link below to try this out today). Not a good idea. It means that deleted text appears in the midst of the non-deleted text, making it hard to read anything.
- Image support: support to display existing images (note: support to add new images to comments will come in a subsequent update). Not sure what this means.
- Selection interaction improvements: we will make it easier to expand and read another comment while a draft comment is in progress. I’m not seeing this improvement either.
- Reported bug fixes such as printing PDFs with comments. I wasn’t aware of this problem.
- Opt-out: we are adding support for a new opt-out toggle in Word’s Options dialog. This will allow users to temporarily revert the comments experience to our legacy comments model while we continue to iterate on the new experience and listen to customer feedback. Good, but why temporarily?
- Font colors: display font formatting. I’m not seeing this – the font option is still greyed out.
Almost all of the old problems are still there. Does anyone know whether any real improvement is on the way? I've turned MC off for now, but I wonder what it'll be like when we lose that option ...
