Modern Comments is awful. I'm trying not to swear here, so feel free in interpret.
I just wrote a comment in a 100k word manuscript I'm editing. Out of habit, I typed, moved my little finger over and touched 'enter' and wham! Comment grrr gone!
There is but one way to fix this. GET RID OF IT.
To everyone who has posted work arounds: Your tireless devotion to obliterating this disaster hasn't gone unappreciated by me. That said, it's a lot of work, and rigmarole, isn't it? We shouldn't have to do that.
