Just to be clear on the registry hack, it only works for now because the Modern Comments functionality (or lack thereof!) is currently part of "Experimental" keys in the registry.
Yes, we are the unlucky ones being experimented on.
Modern Comments functionality will not be accessed via these keys once they are rolled out as part of a working Word update across the whole 365 platform. At that point it would make sense to remove the "unneeded program bloat" of legacy comments, and so legacy comments would not be possible.
The option then becomes using the rollback option to a "working" Word 365 version (so why use the subscription model then if not accepting updates?) or to reinstate a purchased version of Word (2013 in my case).
I do actually see a collaboration need for Modern Comments as, occasionally, I do collaborate in that fashion using Google Docs when as part of some local social committee I interactively work on some issue. However, it's something I and everyone else here, and a likely multitude of similar workers/users elsewhere, have absolutely no desire or need for in our day jobs. So, it's clear to me a toggle between the two comment types is a requirement.
