In today's digital age, data is growing at an exponential rate. Driven by user and AI generated content, more than 2 billion new files are added to Microsoft 365 every day. This increase in data means businesses need robust solutions for data recovery and lifecycle management. Microsoft 365 Backup offers exceptional data recovery speeds and seamless integration with existing Microsoft 365 services to safeguard your critical data.

Microsoft 365 Backup: Fast and reliable recovery

Microsoft 365 Backup is designed to keep your business running by providing fast and reliable backup and restore capabilities. It ensures that your data from Microsoft SharePoint, OneDrive, and Exchange Online is easily recoverable, adding resilience against cyberattacks, and offering flexible management options. Unlike traditional backup solutions that rely on slow import and export processes, Microsoft 365 Backup offers you a scalable and secure solution with 10 minute recovery points and recovery times on the order of hours. This means that businesses can restore data at ultrafast speeds, significantly reducing downtime and ensuring business continuity.

Our approach in architecting and delivering Microsoft 365 Backup capabilities is focused on closing gaps in otherwise challenging or impossible large-scale recovery operations. Beyond that, we’re delivering additional tools to help with management and operations in 2025.

Here are some of the forthcoming features that will improve your manageability and recovery granularity:

PowerShell control: Gives you the ability to configure backups and execute restores using PowerShell instead of the product user interface. This functionality enables you to execute larger scale operations more efficiently or to automate recurring activities.

Backup Admin Role: Leverage this dedicated role to allow specific admins in your company to operate backup and restore actions across all supported workloads. This will simplify operational management and end user support cases.

Dynamic rule-based backup: Today, you can already create backup policies based on distribution lists and security groups. Those additions are based on a point-in-time static snapshot of members of those lists or groups. With this new enhancement, the tool will automatically update these policies as membership changes dynamically. We will also be delivering a full workload feature that will automatically add any new sites, users, or shared mailboxes to your active backup policies as well.

Granular file-level restore: Perform file-level browsing of your backups and restore files directly to your live SharePoint and OneDrive sites. This gives you the flexibility to handle smaller scale restores within the Microsoft 365 Backup tool. The full site restore capabilities already available remain the best choice for large-scale recovery operations. Granular file-level restore capability will be in preview by mid-2025.

Partner solutions and future enhancements

Microsoft 365 Backup is built on a robust platform that supports both first-party and third-party solutions. Recognized Microsoft partner solutions can leverage the same underlying platform to deliver additional value, such as lifecycle management intelligence, robust recovery plans, single pane of glass coverage of all your data estates, and enhanced operational management capabilities.

We are excited to share how ServiceNow is adopting Veeam’s Premium plan for Veeam Data Cloud built on Microsoft 365 Backup Storage.

“ServiceNow, like many enterprise companies, needed high-performance backup and restore solutions for Microsoft 365. We’re excited to have found the solution with Veeam, using their Data Cloud built on Microsoft Azure and integrated with Microsoft 365 Backup Storage. Once implemented, the solution will offer fast backup and recovery, extended retention, granular file-level restores, and comprehensive Teams support for ServiceNow's internal user base of 29,000."

We’re working closely with partners who offer you additional options to adopt a recognized solution built on Microsoft 365 Backup Storage. Each partner provides unique differentiation on top of the scaled speed benefits of the Backup Storage platform itself. These additional differentiations are highlighted on the recognized partner solution page.

Enhanced version controls
With Backup providing a strong recoverability story, you can adopt the new enhanced version controls for OneDrive and SharePoint to optimize your version lifecycle management. These controls allow your administrators to set automatic or time-based version limits, optimizing the tradeoff between recoverability and storage footprint. This allows businesses to reduce storage costs while retaining the ability to recover important data.

Safeguard your data for seamless business continuity
Together, Microsoft 365 Backup, Microsoft 365 Backup Storage, and enhanced version controls create a foundation for scalable, cost-effective, and secure enterprise content management. These solutions enable businesses to recover quickly after an attack, store inactive data at a lower cost, and gain greater control over their storage use. By leveraging these tools, businesses can ensure business continuity and stay focused on their most relevant data.
