Hi, Microsoft 365 Insiders! I’m Bola Soneye, a Product Manager on the OneNote team. I’m excited to share an update to Microsoft OneNote on Windows that gives you more flexibility over proofing languages in your notebook pages.

More control over proofing language in OneNote on Windows

Many of you, especially those of you who are multilingual or work on global teams, told us that you wanted more control over how proofing languages are applied in OneNote. You asked, and we listened!

Until now, proofing in OneNote was applied at the paragraph level and followed your keyboard language – a great experience for multilingual users that remains unchanged. However, it didn’t suit every writing style. With this update, you now have additional options beyond per-paragraph proofing:

  • Apply a proofing language to an entire page for consistent writing.
  • Set a default proofing language that stays consistent regardless of your keyboard input.

How it works

  1. In OneNote on Windows, go to Review > Language > Set Proofing Language.
  2. Choose your preferred language:
    • To apply the selected language to the content of the current page, click Apply to whole page.
    • To make the selected language the default for new pages and new content, uncheck Follow keyboard input language.

NOTE: You can always select any paragraph or text and change its language later.

Availability

This update is rolling out to OneNote on Windows users running Version 2512 (Build 19515.20000) or later. It will reach general availability by the end of January 2026.

Feedback

These improvements were guided by your feedback about multilingual writing! We’d love to hear how the new proofing options work for you. To share your thoughts, go to Help > Feedback in OneNote.
