Hi, Insiders! Summer for students is meant to be about relaxing, spending time with loved ones, and maybe earning some extra cash. But, the “summer slide” is real – for example, studies have shown that students in grades 3 to 5 lose approximately 20% of their school-year gains in reading and 27% in math during summer vacation. Turn to Microsoft Copilot for inspiration and continue to learn this summer!
Curate a book list
Reading on the beach or listening to an audiobook by a pool – what could be better? Just tell Copilot the kinds of books you’re looking for or your level, and you’re well on your way to hitting that summer reading goal! If you don’t have a reading goal, Copilot can create one tailored to your age and grade, too.
Sample prompt
I’m going into fifth grade and want to keep up my reading skills this summer. What are five books I could read that would help me prepare for school in the fall?
Copilot’s response
Get some quick test practice
No one wants to sit at their desk for hours when the weather’s nice – and you don’t have to either to stay on top of your studying! As you near the start of the new school year, ask Copilot to create short quizzes testing your knowledge on skills you acquired in the past academic year (to ensure retention) or topics you might encounter in the new school year (to get a head start).
Sample prompt
Create a short quiz that takes 10 minutes or less to complete testing me on the names of body parts. Make it a printable worksheet.

Create a fun learning environment for your kids
As a parent, you can use Copilot to gather ideas on how to keep your kids’ minds active without taking away their summer bliss. Try asking for activity suggestions, or ways to turn an everyday chore into a learning moment.
Sample prompt
What are some activities I can do this summer with stuff I have at home with my 7-year-old that will prepare her for third grade in the fall? Turn it into a short checklist.
Copilot’s response
Turn a day trip into an educational experience
Copilot can also help you turn a day trip or short vacation into a memorable learning experience. You can prompt it to provide suggestions for museums or other educational stops, or collect historical information on a landmark or location.
Sample prompt
I’m taking my two kids to the Grand Canyon this summer and want to incorporate learning moments. Can you create a fun worksheet of facts and history for them to fill out while we explore the national park?
