Hi, Microsoft 365 Insiders! My name is Victoria Tran, and I’m a Product Manager on the PowerPoint team. I’m excited to share with you updates to Microsoft Copilot in PowerPoint for Windows that make it easier to create individual slides based on a file or prompt.

Create a PowerPoint slide from a file with Microsoft Copilot

It takes time and brainpower to create presentation slides that are polished, engaging, and impactful. Microsoft Copilot can now assist you in this process by quickly turning an idea or existing file into a fully designed slide in Microsoft PowerPoint, with content ready to edit and refine. By leveraging other files, you can maintain accuracy and your brand voice. You can also use Copilot directly on the canvas – previously, creating slides with Copilot was only available via the Copilot chat.

The presentation creation process just got a lot more efficient and creative – no more rushing to deliver a last-minute deck!

How it works

  1. Open a new or existing presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint on your Windows device.
  2. Select the Copilot button above your slide, then select Add a slide.

NOTE: You can also select New Slide with Copilot in the Home tab.

  1. Describe the topic you want Copilot to cover in the slide, or choose from one of the prompts provided to help you get started. To have Copilot build off of existing content, select Reference a file or type / to choose a file that you would like Copilot to refer to when creating the new slide.

NOTE: This feature currently only supports Word files, with more file support coming soon.

  1. Select the Send arrow in the lower right-hand corner and Copilot will draft a slide for you.
  2. Edit the slide to suit your needs, ask Copilot to rewrite your text, or start over with a new prompt to generate a new slide.

Tips and tricks

  • To ensure Copilot references the desired content, especially in larger files, direct it to a specific section or topic within the file.
  • For the best results when prompting Copilot to create a slide, keep your requests concise and focused on 1-2 topics or key points.

Known issues

  • Copilot does not currently support prompts requesting specific slide formatting like font, colors, background, and images.

Availability

This feature is available to PowerPoint for Windows users with a Copilot license (learn more about licenses for consumers and for businesses) running Version 2502 (Build 18526.20144).

Markets

This feature is currently available in English (US) only. Additional language support is coming soon!

Feedback

We are continuing to add support for more languages and features to enhance this experience over time, so all requests are welcome! Select the thumbs up or down buttons in Copilot, then provide more information in the feedback box about what you liked or what went wrong with your responses.

Hi Victoria - Very excited for this and more that I know will be coming! I am currently challenged getting Copilot to read a Word document that is optimized (by Copilot) for Powerpoint ingestion/deck creation, and use my company branding (we have necessary licenses and have created the correct templates). It always reverts to some other branding.

Hi jmoyer1, I'm glad you're excited about what's coming! I'd like to better understand the challenge you're facing so we can help improve the experience. When you mention that Copilot isn't applying your company branding correctly:

      - Are you creating the deck via Copilot in PowerPoint on-canvas experience
      - Is the correct template opened in the ppt file when you try to create a deck with Copilot?

Any additional details or steps you’ve tried would be super helpful. We want to make sure Copilot is delivering the right, branded experience for you and your team.

  • Hello Victoria , my company and customers have really big expectations on this feature but right now feeling frustrating that Copilot for Powerpoint doesn't bring over the images from the reference word document, this would be indeed the largest time saving in our common work.  any idea whether development has it in their radars and if such any prioritization / target date for it?

Hi christophedentinger06, thank you for sharing this feedback—and I completely understand how impactful this capability would be. You're absolutely right that this would be a major time-saver for many workflows. The good news is that this is on our radar, and the team recognizes it as a high-value scenario. We’re actively exploring how to improve this experience.
