Hi, Microsoft 365 Insiders! My name is Gurkaran Singh, and I’m a Product Manager on the Office AI team. I’m excited to share that you can now add images to your Copilot prompts in Word and PowerPoint.

Add images to your Copilot prompts in Word and PowerPoint

Including images in Copilot prompts can be quite beneficial!

  • Efficiency: Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Including an image can save time by quickly conveying information that might take longer to describe in text.
  • Enhanced understanding: Images can provide additional context that helps Copilot better understand your request. For example, if you’re asking about a specific object or scene, an image can clarify details that might be ambiguous in text alone.
  • Improved accuracy: Images can lead to more precise recommendations about visual content. If you need help identifying something or understanding a visual concept, or for complex topics where a visual aid is needed to complement the text, an image can ensure Copilot gives you the most accurate responses.

You can ask questions about a picture or screenshot, extract text from an image, identify key takeaways from a chart or table, translate image information into copy, ask for suggestions on how to improve content, or generate alt text.

Copilot grounds its responses in your context, making it simple to get relevant and useful results fast. For example, if you ask a question about a screenshot of a chart from a presentation, Copilot will leverage information from the entire presentation in its answer to ensure what it provides is accurate and tailored to your needs.

How it works

  1. Select the Copilot button on the Home tab in Word or PowerPoint.
  2. In the Copilot prompt box, paste an image from your clipboard by selecting the chat box and right-clicking, or pressing CTRL+V
  3. Add a text prompt along with your image.

Scenarios to try

Here are some helpful prompts to use with your image to get the best response possible:

  • “Explain this chart in the context of this document.”
  • “Generate alt text to describe this image.”
  • “Summarize the text in this image in bullet points.”
  • “Extract the text from this image and write it for a professional audience.”
  • “Extract the data in this picture and turn it into a table.”
  • “Explain how this image is related to this document.”
  • “How can I improve the slide/diagram pictured here to better capture my ideas?”

Tips and tricks

  • To add an image to a prompt, you can select the Add an image button under the chat box, and follow instructions in the popover to paste an image or upload an image from your device.
  • You can upload images of whiteboards, receipts, and even screenshots of charts or PDFs to extract data, write descriptions, or summarize text.
  • In content extraction scenarios, we recommend verifying the extracted content for accuracy.
  • Leverage the grounding capabilities for optimal responses by asking Copilot to provide recommendations for images you upload based on the document or presentation you’re working on.

Known issues

  • If you have a large amount of text in an image, Copilot may truncate the content it extracts.
  • Dragging and dropping images into the Copilot prompt box in Word or PowerPoint is not supported.
