It's a complex matter. I strongly believe that before the use of SSD and NVMe and the gigantic amount of data these could shuffle (over the wire) we never looked into that closely. Now we have all the speed on the physical disk and wire, too (Ethernet, AOSP (USB 3.x) we basically revealed this. Also given the file sizes growing not necessarily the RAM amount of VMs and computers at the same speed.
Imho this issue is only happening when RAM Cache is saturated by files buffered. Smaller file size like 1-2 GB aren't a problem at all.
