I honestly don't understand how MS can announce a change like this and not think about backend automation. For us, we have an entire automated shared mailbox provisioning setup that requires exchange access. It all runs inside of Azure automation so automation via SPNs is a must, but then if it becomes Azure only this comes into vendor lockin. We still would like to be able to expand into AWS with automation to exchange where necessary.
While I agree that IMAP and POP should go away, there definitely are use cases like mentioned above where Jira or Service Now checks a mailbox via IMAP, and they will never move to support OAuth.
