In September, we announced that we will be deprecating the classic Exchange admin center (EAC). Today, we are sharing details about the next phase of deprecation. Mail flow features hosted in the classic EAC will be retired in December 2021. Between now and December, if an admin clicks on any mail flow feature links in the classic EAC, a banner for these features will be displayed to make it easier to locate the new home for these features. The modern EAC offers an updated and modern UI experience for managing your mail flow.

Navigating to Mail Flow Pages

In the modern EAC, under the Mail flow tab, you will find pages for Message trace, Rules, Remote domains, Accepted domains, Connectors, Alerts, and Alert policies. This is organized similar to the classic EAC, where these items were found at the top of the page.

Mail flow reports can be found under the Reports section beneath Mail flow, and Mail flow insights can be found below Insights.

Message Trace

Message Trace in the modern EAC has also been updated with the modern design.

Running a Message Trace

Start a trace by selecting + Start a Trace. The panel, as shown below, will fly out. You can run a message trace just like you would in the classic EAC.

For more search options, you can select a custom time range by selecting Custom time range. For additional options such as Message ID and delivery status, you can select Detailed search options as shown below. See Message trace in the modern EAC in Exchange Online for more information on message trace in the modern EAC.

In the modern EAC message trace:

  • You can request one of three different report types when you start a trace.
    • A summary report is available in near real-time, viewable immediately after you select Search. It provides message summary information, including date, sender, recipient, subject, and status. You can filter and export the results and get additional details about each message returned (such as diagnostic information, message events, related records, and more).
    • An enhanced summary report is available as a downloadable CSV file. It includes the same information as the summary report, along with additional details such as direction, original client IP address, and more.
    • An extended report is available as a downloadable CSV file. It includes the same information as the summary and enhanced summary reports, along with comprehensive routing and message event details. Learn more about extended message trace reports.
  • You can save custom queries for searches that are unique to your environment.
  • Default queries are provided for you based on what we have seen admins use the most.
  • Autosaved queries saves the last 10 queries that were run but are not saved manually.
  • Track your pending downloadable reports under the downloadable reports tab. It will show you the availability status of the report.

Mail flow reports

The modern EAC offers great actionable insights such as mail flow reports. The following mail flow reports are available:

  • Peter_Holdridge my apologies I gave Erica the wrong information, confusing it with a transient issue I ran into last week whereby you couldn't 'resolve' or search on addresses that weren't in the directory (e.g. an external address). That issue was indeed transient. You are right in the new EAC you can't search by proxy address whereas in the legacy EAC message trace you can. You can also do it in the Message Trace in the legacy Security and Compliance Center (you enter the proxy address, e.g. kev@lunadream.com, then press enter).

While this works in the SCC Message Trace, indeed this doesn't work in the new EAC Message Trace, where you're forced to enter the suggested primary SMTP address exactly as you described. We've opened a work item to fix this ASAP.

Again, my humble apologies for the initial confusion. Please let me know if I've still misunderstood your report.

    Best wishes,

Please, before you start replacing the old admin centre, make sure that the CSP delegation is working! Thank you

  • ericacho Please don't brush this off. This is not a transient error and has been an issue ever since the new Exchange Admin Center was created and mail trace was added.

You cannot search for specific TO email addresses that are not their primarySMTPaddress. It won't allow you to search their proxy address.

If you don't understand the issue, then don't brush me off and call it a "transient issue".

  • Hi Pamor ,

Thank you for your feedback. Your input is valuable to us.

I have sent you a message to get further details on this issue. Please respond there.

  • Hi Peter_Holdridge ,

Thank you for your feedback. Your input is important to us.

This looks like it was a transient error and it seems to be working now. Please let us know if you have any more issues with this.

  • This is a problem when using message trace to trace an email from or to a specific proxy address on a mailbox. You can only trace a message from or to a proxy address with the legacy message trace, and this functionality hasn't been moved over to the new experience. This really hinders investigations!

For example, in the old legacy message trace, I can enter someone's proxy address (not their primarySMTPaddress) to search for message to or from that person by clicking "check names".  In the new experience, you cannot do this. You have no choice, but to choose the suggested mailbox address which is the primarySMTPaddress when doing a trace.

We need the ability to run a trace on ANY address, not just the primarySMTPaddress of the user's mailbox.

    Hi Exchange Team,

will the Connectors page also be deprecated? Just last week I had some issues with connectors in the modern EAC. I was able to create a new connector but I wasn't able to edit it afterwards because validation failed. In the classic EAC the validation of exactly the same changes (TLS settings) was successful. Just wanted to let you know that there might be issues.
