are there any plans to let customers specify custom Synapse roles?
On Azure resource level this is already possible to define custom Azure roles: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/role-based-access-control/custom-roles
However, Synapse has its (additional) own access control within Synapse workspace with its own roles.
