If you are already running a SQL MI on General Purpose under an Azure Reservation, can you upgrade to Next Gen General Purpose under the same Reservation?

Absolutely - yes! Next‑gen General Purpose isn’t a new SKU; it’s an enhancement of the existing General Purpose SKU.
That means:

  • If you're purchasing a new reservation: you simply purchase the standard General Purpose reservation - it covers both classic GP and Next‑gen GP.
  • If you already have a GP reservation: when you upgrade your SQL MI from classic GP to Next‑gen GP, your existing reservation continues to apply automatically.

Everything keeps working out of the box - just upgrade and you're good to go.
