Azure Migrate now supports virtual desktop assessments and migrations, a high-priority workload for today’s remote work environment, using Lakeside and first party tools. Check out the new VDI migration Microsoft Mechanics video for a demo of using Azure Migrate and Lakeside for migrating virtual desktop infrastructure to Windows Virtual Desktop.

With COVID-19 forcing customers to shift to a remote model, many organizations that weren’t previously thinking of a cloud model are now considering the move more than ever. Organizations are prioritizing moving to cloud quickly and in a low-cost manner.

Azure Migrate simplifies cloud migration with integrated tools, all included with an Azure subscription at no additional cost. Customers can take advantage of Azure cost benefits. Azure Migrate tooling performs lift-and-shift migrations to Azure and does this more rapidly than many competitive migration solutions.

To migrate virtual desktops to WVD, follow these 3 steps:

Discover: Run a discovery of your on-premises datacenter using Lakeside, an integrated ISV tool in Azure Migrate. Lakeside will collect performance information using clients installed on on-premises virtual desktops.

Assess: Use Lakeside to perform your assessment. The Lakeside assessment provides:

  • Sizing assessment
  • Composition of current OS images
  • VM and software usage information
  • Performance data for core apps
  • Resource consumption and utilization
  • Usage segments based on user behavior

Lakeside assessment information syncs back into the Azure Migrate dashboard with the click of a button.

Migrate: Use Azure Migrate: Server Migration to replicate machines using assessment data and recommendations from Lakeside/other assessment tools. Run a test migration, and then migrate workloads to Azure

For anyone referencing this article or the seeing the Lakeside Systrack assessment tool as the default app within Azure Migrate VDI; having spoken with the assessment provider, this service is cancelled within Azure.
