SHL: Administrative Tools

Description:

The Administrative Tools folder for Windows allows a central location for several tools/applets to manage both the local machine and remote machines.

Scoping the Issue:

The most common issue related to administrative tools is corrupted or missing shortcuts and not having any items under administrative tools.

This can be corrected by browsing to the following folders and copying working shortcuts off a working machine or simply creating new ones pointing to the correct snap-ins under System32.

Data Gathering:

In all instances, collecting either MPS Reports with the General, Internet and Networking, Business Networks and Server Components diagnostics, or a Performance-oriented MSDT manifest must be done.  Additional data required may include the following:

Process Monitor: If you have the opportunity to do so, it may be worth using Process Monitor to examine what is being accessed when replicating an issue.

View or collect contents of the following locations

For XP and Windows 2003

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

For Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 2008

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

Troubleshooting / Resolution:

You can try to resolve the issue by recreating new shortcuts pointing to the missing snap-ins . A partial list of these tools would be:

%SystemRoot%\system32\certsrv.msc ---- Certification Authority

%SystemRoot%\Cluster\CluAdmin.exe ---- Cluster Administrator

%SystemRoot%\system32\Com\comexp.msc ---- Component Services
