Overview

Azure Database for MySQL flexible servers based on the Business Critical tier with Ev5 show outstanding performance, with up to 30% more QPS (queries per second) and 50% lower latency compared to Ev4.

Ev5-series virtual machines run on the 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Platinum 8370C (Ice Lake) processor in a hyper threaded configuration, which provides a better value proposition for most general-purpose workloads. This new processor features an all core turbo clock speed of 3.5 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost TechnologyIntel® Advanced-Vector Extensions 512 (Intel® AVX-512), and Intel® Deep Learning Boost. Featuring up to 672 GiB of RAM, these virtual machines are ideal for memory-intensive enterprise applications, relational database servers, and in-memory analytics workloads.

Achieve 30% better performance in Business Critical with Ev5

The Business Critical tier is the recommended service tier for Tier 1 workloads that require higher QPS and lower latency. The new generation of compute offers better performance at the same price point in both low- and high-concurrency scenarios.

The graphs below compare the QPS and latency between Ev4 and Ev5 for a common OLTP workload (70% reads and 30% writes) running on a 16 vCore Azure Database for MySQL – flexible server based on the Business Critical tier.

The first graph focuses on a high-concurrency scenario. We ran sysbench on 10 tables, each with 10 million records. QPS was more than 140K QPS for up to 500 connections.

For the low-concurrency scenario, we also ran sysbench on 10 tables, each with 10 million records. Here, we observed similar results showing that Ev5 is more performant than Ev4.

Availability

In addition, the Business Critical tier for Azure Database for MySQL – Flexible Server now supports the Ev5 compute series in more regions than ever!

Australia East China North 2 Korea Central West Central US
Australia Southeast China North 3 Korea South West Europe
Brazil South East US North Europe West US
Canada Central East US 2 South Africa North West US 2
Canada East France Central South Central US West US 3

Conclusion

The Business Critical tier in the Azure Database for MySQL - Flexible Server is tuned specifically to support Tier-1 workloads that require high QPS and low latency. With the new Ev5 compute hardware, you can boost workload performance by 30% with higher concurrency and better throughput.

  • Hello Yahor! We are working with the Azure compute team to bring v5 hardware to SEA and East Asia regions. Regarding the benchmark, we run the test on the default settings without any changes to give the out of the box performance experience.

    Nice!

We're waiting for v5 hardware in Southeast Asia and East Asia!

Also, when you make such benchmarks, please share if you tweaked any parameters after database creation, for instance, if you changed the multi-threading model to use threads pool or anything like that, so we understand what parameters the test was made with.
