In today’s post, we showcase the culture of continuous learning at Unit4 and how the organization’s creative approach to learning motivates its teams to skill up for the future. Plus, we learn how that culture benefits not only the organization’s workforce but also its customers. \n   \n For 40 years, Unit4 has created software that delivers a better “People Experience” for services organizations whose purpose is to help others. As the company transformed its business by moving its offerings to the cloud, it was its own workforce that needed help learning the skills required to be successful in a new, agile business model. \n   \n The global company provides a suite of enterprise software for people-centric organizations, focusing on the professional services, public sector, nonprofit, and higher education industries. With this cloud-first company that follows a cloud services model, Unit4 customers benefit from the latest technologies and solutions and from continuous improvement and responsiveness. \n   \n But supporting that business means upskilling its people, and change takes time, notes Helen Aivazian, Global People Development Manager at Unit4. “We promote a culture of continuous learning, but we’ve been on a really quick journey to the cloud,” she explains. “Everything that we’re doing is about becoming a more agile organization and delivering excellence in every interaction with our customers.” \n   \n \n   \n Unit4 has worked closely with cloud partner Microsoft to support the company’s skilling efforts. “Becoming a true cloud organization is a big mindset shift, and we needed to prepare our teams,” Helen adds. \n   \n Helping people shift gears and embrace challenges \n Helen’s group developed new role-based and level-based learning paths, using in-house training materials and Microsoft Learn resources. “We found that people are more proactive about learning when they know they have a path to follow,” she observes. \n   \n The learning paths help individuals find the right type and level of training to meet their new job demands. For technical staff, that might mean a focus on advancing to a role like Azure administrator, DevOps engineer, or solutions architect. Or it can mean learning about new technologies for security, data engineering, or AI. \n   \n \n   \n “The great thing is that all the Microsoft resources slotted into our learning paths,” Helen says. Before long, people were posting newly minted Microsoft Certification badges on their LinkedIn profiles. \n   \n The company doesn’t require certification, but “it gives us some quality assurance,” notes Ebba Ekstrand, Unit4 Global Learning & Development Officer based in Stockholm. \n   \n Helen agrees. “Certifications tell us that people have done the training, they do have the knowledge, and they’re working with the product in the best way that’s been taught to them.” \n   \n That knowledge is transforming the way Unit4 does business, as teams apply the latest learnings to their projects. According to Helen, “The business areas that work with the Microsoft stack have definitely benefited from having access to the learning materials provided through our partnership with Microsoft.” \n   \n Advancing a career: Amine’s story \n No one represents the learning culture at Unit4 better than Amine Sahal, whose ambitious learning journey helps him meet job demands and advance his career. Six months ago, he was promoted from DevOps Lead to Cloud DevOps Manager, with responsibility for a team of 10 operations engineers and developers around the world. The role comes with a new level of decision-making responsibilities, and that means staying on top of Azure. He attends webinars, workshops, and Microsoft instructor-led training (ILT). \n   \n The Microsoft ILT is a favorite “because there’s interaction,” he points out. “You can talk to the instructor in chats or on team calls with all the other people in the class.” \n   \n \n   \n The hands-on labs are “the best part,” he observes. “I could start implementing new things like automation using Azure Functions.” As a developer, he appreciates how easy it is to incorporate code from the labs, which is made available on GitHub. “It facilitates the work and makes the task simpler and faster to achieve.” \n   \n “I learned so many things that help me do my work and perform better on a daily basis,” Amine reports. “After finishing a [Microsoft] course and setting up things myself during the labs, I knew how to make the technical decisions required in my role as a manager.” \n   \n What he learned also fueled some creative brainstorming sessions with colleagues. “We came up with a lot of brilliant ideas after the course!” His team found new ways to take advantage of Azure services while developing the next generation of the company’s flagship product, ERPx. \n   \n Amine is focused on the next set of skills he wants to learn and on the certification exams that will help him achieve his goal. “I learned something about myself,” he observes. “Certification for me is more than a badge or the proof of knowledge for your career. It’s very important for forcing me to learn, especially when you don't have a lot of time.” \n   \n The learning paths developed by Unit4 in partnership with Microsoft have made his journey straightforward. “Microsoft has a solution for everything!” he concludes. “The courses organized internally by Unit4 in partnership with Microsoft for the management and engineering teams really helped us to be successful in our new roles.” \n   \n A challenge with prizes \n To support employees in their ongoing training, Helen’s group developed new learning paths in partnership with Microsoft. This year, the company also hosted a spring and a fall Learning Festival based on those paths. Each festival included around 70 sessions of in-house classes, alongside training based on Microsoft Learn materials—a new addition for 2021. “It was a big success!” Helen remembers, noting that participation grew nearly 20 percent compared to last year. \n   \n A popular item on the agenda was the Cloud Skills Challenge, a gamified experience where participants use Microsoft Learn guided, hands-on, and interactive content to gain skills in Microsoft cloud technologies. One challenge focused on mastering Azure skills and the other on Microsoft 365. \n   \n “We saw people who don’t necessarily work in technical roles sign up for the Azure challenge,” Helen recalls. “They were curious about it, and that really created momentum for our learning paths based on the Microsoft Learn content.” \n   \n A learning culture can help future-proof a people-first company \n Helen reports that the company is on track with its learning and development plans. As the teams at Unit4 deepen their understanding of Azure and other Microsoft technologies, they find new ways to improve products—just as Amine and his team have done—and to keep Unit4 competitive in a tough market. \n   \n It makes sense at a company for which “Choose curiosity, embrace challenges” is a core value. \n   \n “It’s empowering for our employees to get the benefit of Microsoft courseware and certifications within the organization for their own future growth and personal development,” Ebba says. “We want to create more of that for our other learning paths.” \n   \n As people gain skills, they “connect the dots,” as Helen puts it. “People really take the time to focus on their daily learning and to embed that in their work. And that's what we want to encourage. In this edition of our #ProudToBeCertified blog series, we’ll dive into how certifications have helped two women on very different career paths. \n   \n \n   \n Jaqueline: How helping herself led to helping others \n As a product manager working for a Microsoft partner, Jacqueline Ye needs to operate in two worlds: business and technology. When she began her role, she needed to be able to communicate with stakeholders and customers to clearly understand their technological and business needs. Then, she would use those insights to collaborate with solution architects and engineers while bringing innovation to life. While building her technical skills with Microsoft Learn, she discovered and earned Microsoft Certifications which helped her gain the confidence and credibility to successfully work with colleagues on both sides. \n   \n As a result of sharing her certification achievements through channels like LinkedIn, Jacqueline started hearing from her professional network – they wanted advice to get ahead but didn’t know where to start. In response to this, Jacqueline launched a Microsoft skill up campaign within her organization to encourage and help her peers advance their skills and careers through learning. Her results? “Today, I'm proud to tell you,” she says, “within six months, we had more than 60 people join us and earn more than 100 certifications.” \n   \n Earning certifications has become more than a personal goal for Jacqueline. She built a community with her leadership and experience during her certification journey and has made continuous learning a mission to help her colleagues. “I want others to know that with some hard work, dedication, and having an always be learning mindset, you can have a fulfilling career.” \n   \n \n   \n Sharon: Supporting her growing family while moving her career forward \n Sharon Bennett, a senior IT instructor, has a history of overcoming adversity through solid planning, persistence, and dedication to continuous learning. Even as a high school dropout, these priorities have helped her achieve a college degree, a successful career, and the ability to support her family financially. Earning certifications were a big part of that. As she says, “Certifications keep my career moving forward.” \n   \n Sharon began her certification journey right out of college. Her first job after graduation required that she become certified. “That's how I started my certification journey,” she says. That first experience motivated her to keep seeking more knowledge and skills through Microsoft Certifications. \n   \n Even when she became a mom, Sharon knew she needed to keep learning to reduce the “motherhood penalty” – typical when one pauses their career to start a family and unfortunately finds themselves at a disadvantage in the workplace. To help close that gap and misperceived competence, she says, “I'd be at home, baby in arms with a textbook in the other hand.” While her learning progress slowed, it didn’t stop. \n   \n Sharon credits her certification accomplishments to her professional and financial success. As part of our ongoing #ProudToBeCertified blog series, we’d like to introduce you to Ricardo Lessa and how he went beyond personal advancement during the COVID crisis. \n   \n \n   \n Ricardo: Helping others starts with helping yourself \n Ricardo Lessa has a history of resilience and self-motivation. When he came out of the datacenter, Ricardo launched his career as an entrepreneur. For about a decade, he ran his own company until the pandemic struck in 2020. When the pandemic started, “My sources of income were literally cut off,” says Ricardo. He was forced to close his business. Searching for new opportunities, a Microsoft MVP and colleague introduced him to the power of certification through Microsoft Learn. \n   \n Making the most of available resources, Ricardo was able to earn Microsoft Certifications that helped him land a job as a pre-sales engineer. And that’s just the beginning. Certification is more than a credential; it’s a personal confidence builder, as Ricardo explains, “the term ‘proud to be’ is the sense of accomplishment for getting the job done, for having completed a stage, for having progressed, for truly scoring a win. And, on a personal level, it greatly improves our focus, our discipline and, consequently, our results.” \n   \n Ricardo was inspired by how his colleague’s advice had made a real impact on his career. So, they joined forces and found a way to help others in similar circumstances. “This situation and its demands inspired us to do something new – something unique,” he says. And together, they began a new technical support community: CloudExpert, an online network of support, training, and resources for professionals designed to get members trained to progress on their career paths. The goal of this network is to help peers rekindle their dreams and get back in the job market sooner than later. \n   \n By creating this new support system for others, Ricardo discovered more about himself than he ever imagined. “I was able to believe again in the possibility of starting over,” Ricardo says, “updating myself and returning to the IT market. I dreamed that I could influence others so that they can overcome hardship and believe in a new beginning. Crayon anticipated those needs by preparing employees with the Microsoft training and certifications required to support their customers’ ambitions. \n   \n \n   \n   \n Microsoft Learn resources naturally aligned with Crayon’s commitment to training, which is broad and long-standing. “We started out with having focus on certification and training from day one,” recalls Crayon Chief Operating Officer (COO) Bente Liberg, who joined the 3,300-person company 20 years ago as its sixth employee. She cites the strategic importance of training—internally and externally. “Our strategy has always been to help customers implement. We train them so that they can use the things they buy from us, and our commitment to training starts with how we educate our own people.” \n   \n Because Crayon both provides services and creates solutions that it sells to customers, the company has a need for its employees to step out of the revenue stream and invest in learning. Bente notes, “It starts with our GMs—actually, all of our country managers have a development KPI for the company. And for them to be able to deliver on that KPI, they need to develop skill sets in the company.” \n   \n This is true at the line level, too, and for recruitment. “That was actually something positive for hiring and also for retention,” Bente continues. “We heard from candidates: ‘Oh, can I [do] training?’ Yes, not only you can do training, you have to do training. ‘Can I take [a] certification?’ Yes. You have to take certifications.” \n   \n Crayon Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Melissa Mulholland made training and Microsoft Certification available broadly across the company—and not just for consultants. In the company’s India team, for example, “We actually had everybody, including finance—everybody—go and pass [Exam] AZ-900, the [Azure] fundamentals exam, because if they have a better understanding, that will make them better at their job.” Beyond fundamentals, more than one-third of the company’s 8,000 certifications cover in-depth topics, she reports. \n   \n \n   \n   \n From the perspective of a potential recruit or a new employee, this focus on training and certification is a professional opportunity. Senior Power BI Developer Allen Deniega recalls what drew him to the company earlier this year, noting that he has already completed two certifications since he joined Crayon. “The whole culture of helping others and promoting professional development—those two really made me come to Crayon,” he recalls. He started investigating training opportunities on his second day and made particular use of the Microsoft Official Practice Tests, often taking the same one multiple times. “Apart from giving you an idea of the structure and the format of the exam and the actual feel of the exam, it allows you to identify your gaps every time.” \n   \n Melissa believes that the learning culture not only makes Crayon more competitive and better able to differentiate its depth of knowledge to customers, but it also helps reduce turnover as employees see their career paths clearly. “It directly corresponds with talent retention, and we have very high retention in our organization. Globally speaking, from an annual standpoint, [turnover is] less than 10 percent, and I really believe that's driven by this culture of learning and development.” \n   \n \n   \n   \n She also believes that training and certification are key to helping the company fulfill its social commitments. In 2021, Crayon created its first environmental, social, and governance (ESG) report.[1] For Crayon, Melissa explains, “Certifications [are] an excellent way to bring in more diverse skill sets and, for example, giving women who want to be in technical roles the ability to.” She says certifications provide a pathway for individuals who may not have had access to professional opportunities because of gender, culture, color, or neurodiversity. Through the training program, in partnership with Microsoft, she says, “If you have the passion and will, and you have the demonstrated certifications behind that, I'm willing to give people chances to prove themselves in roles, and I think that's an important mindset that we have in the company that very much aligns to our ESG focus.” \n   \n Microsoft and Microsoft Learn have been steady partners for Crayon in these achievements, Melissa points out. “I am so grateful for Microsoft, I think really having our back, at being able to guide us,” she says. “You experience growth when you push yourself to learn and adapt, and it'll open up not only career opportunities, but it'll also give you more information to be able to do your job better. Never get in the ‘comfort zone.’” \n   \n [1] An ESG report focuses on an organization’s environmental, social, and governance impacts and priorities. The United Nations has published a comprehensive set of these sorts of priorities, called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which many organizations use to guide their own ESG goals and reporting. MBS, one of the oldest business schools in France, looks to the future with a visionary plan. It aims to incorporate training for industry-recognized Microsoft Certifications into its graduate curriculum. These certifications can help validate the technical skills of its business-focused students and could give them a competitive edge in the job market. \n   \n Integrating Microsoft Certifications into MBS graduate business programs \n Recognizing that digital transformation is reshaping the workplace, the faculty at MBS wanted to help ensure that its graduates acquire the technical acumen that industries are seeking. In discussing the programs that MBS is developing with Microsoft Learn for Educators, PGE Director Cédrine Joly observes, “This is a big added value for the résumés of our students when they graduate.” She explains that MBS works within a framework, noting, “We gather all the skills and competencies that our students should have to graduate. Understanding the use of technology and having digital proficiency is completely in line with this framework.” \n   \n Moez Bennouri, Director of MSc programs at MBS and a driving force behind the integration of Microsoft Certification into the curriculum, reports that although future business managers might not directly use the tools and technologies, they need to understand the reasons why the tools are being used. MBS started by introducing its students to the concept of low-code and no-code solutions. \n   \n Last year, it rolled out the first phase of its courses in conjunction with Microsoft Learn for Educators—enabling students to create low-code Microsoft Power Platform solutions and training them for the Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Fundamentals certification (Exam PL-900). Joly elaborates, “The objective is for graduates who have taken the certification classes to be able to support the digital transformation of their department in a business or perhaps help their company to become more digitalized.” The faculty at MBS was so committed that it made the low-code course and certification training mandatory for its 1,000 graduate students. \n   \n Working with Microsoft Learn for Educators to craft a program \n Microsoft Learn for Educators often works with computer science and IT faculty at colleges and universities, since many easily see the alignment with technical skilling. The program, however, supports departments and faculty across a wide range of disciplines in the delivery of cutting-edge technical instruction, so engaging with one of the oldest business schools in France to create an innovative course of study aligned to Microsoft Certifications is an exciting opportunity to envision the future together. \n   \n The team from Microsoft helped the educators at MBS decide which certifications to work with in the first phase and how best to integrate later phases of training and materials into its curriculum. Other phases will include the integration of Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals (Exam DP-900), Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (CRM) (Exam MB-910), and Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (ERP) (Exam MB-920) into MBS supply chain and big data courses. The aim is to integrate a Microsoft Certification into every MBS specialization course. \n   \n Faculty worked closely with Microsoft on the execution details of this large project. Microsoft Learn for Educators supplied many resources (including pedagogical materials, such as teaching guides, assessment guides, and datasheets). It also provided self-paced online learning paths and modules on Microsoft Learn, arranged exams, and provided support for students. Joly recalls, “We received advice on how to help our students understand the benefits of certification. The students aren’t going to be in IT—they are going to be business leaders and managers. They need to understand their role in these evolving technologies because digital transformation is the future.” \n   \n Studying for Microsoft Certification and earning academic credit \n MBS has two approaches to earning academic credit for studying for Microsoft Certification. The MSc course teaches the technology and prepares students to earn academic credit for taking the actual certification exam. The PGE course embeds training for the certification exam and taking a practice exam in a program that includes working with use cases to understand how to deploy strategies for digital transformation in business settings. Marc-Olivier Sercki, a professor who teaches Microsoft Power Platform certification in the PGE course, adds, “Our graduates will be able to communicate with people at their companies about using the application to solve business problems—for example, to automate manual processes.” \n   \n Business students, especially because they are not getting a technical degree, appreciate the validation of their technical skills that a Microsoft Certification demonstrates to a prospective employer. A partnership with Microsoft Learn is helping Koç to accelerate a sweeping digital transformation across its companies and to give people the skills they—and the business—need to succeed. \n   \n “Microsoft Learn is a powerful digital learning tool that supports innovation and accelerates technology adaptation,” according to Cihan Günsür, Koç Holding Group Leader of Learning and Development. “It helps the right person develop their competence in the right content and at the right time.” \n   \n The learning culture is reflected across all the companies that make up Koç, where hundreds of digital transformation initiatives are underway—everything from application modernization and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to the latest e-commerce, security, and AI platforms. It’s no surprise that transformation on this scale impacts the organization chart. To prepare its workforce for new and changing roles, Koç launched a comprehensive, organizational transformation program called the Future of Work Initiative. The plan includes role-based learning paths that track to Microsoft Certifications for in-demand job roles, such as data analyst and AI engineer. \n   \n Koç participates in the Microsoft Enterprise Skills Initiative (ESI)—a program that offers training and credential resources and opportunities to help learners at enterprise organizations to build the skills they need to be successful with Microsoft technologies. Through the Enterprise Skills Initiative, Koç learners have access to courses, self-paced training, Microsoft Certifications, Microsoft Virtual Training Days, gamified learning, Microsoft Learn content, and more. \n   \n In addition, Koç was an early adopter of the recently announced Microsoft Applied Skills credentials. Applied Skills enable learners to gain proficiency in skill sets specific to critical business problems and to validate skills that they can apply to key Azure, cybersecurity, and AI projects. To earn a credential, learners pass an on-demand, interactive lab assessment, completing a series of tasks using the relevant technology. Task-based credentials include deploying and configuring Azure Monitor, securing Azure services, and more. To prepare learners to earn credentials, Microsoft Learn offers on-demand learning paths that learners can follow at their own pace. \n   \n According to Özgür Orhan, Koç Holding IT Security and Infrastructure Services Group Manager, “With Applied Skills, our learners working on current and future strategic digital transformation projects will be able to grasp the knowledge and validate their skills in a shorter period of time from Microsoft Learn. This will boost their confidence, increase their proficiency, and ensure project success, improving time to market.” \n   \n The following stories explore the impact of the Future of Work Initiative and the learning cultures that developed at three Koç companies. Each produces distinct products and services using different technologies. Yet they all saw how learning can boost individual performance and business outcomes. \n   \n Learning provides opportunities for employees at Ford Otosan \n Ford Otomotiv Sanayi A.Ş. (Ford Otosan) is one of Turkey’s leading automotive companies, employing more than 20,000 people. It also boasts Turkey’s largest research and development organization in this industry, with more than 1,600 workers. As part of its digital transformation plan, Ford Otosan partnered with Microsoft to develop the intelligent ConnecTruck system using Microsoft Azure. Drivers can monitor and control trucks remotely and receive predictive maintenance suggestions and other helpful alerts through a mobile app and in-vehicle software. To develop this solution, technology teams adopted the latest security and cloud services from Microsoft. \n   \n Knowing that transformation means new skills, in 2019, Ford Otosan began a comprehensive effort to develop learning paths. For each path, managers considered the organization’s strategic objectives, the skills needed to meet the business outcomes, and the current level of employee knowledge so the company could fill in the knowledge gaps. \n   \n “As a result of this transformation program, we identified and classified all our existing roles as requiring no skilling, reskilling, or upskilling. We also defined new competencies for each IT employee,” explains Engin Gümüşel, IT Cloud and Platform Management Leader at Ford Otosan. “With the Enterprise Skills Initiative, we assigned most of the trainings for the related employees so they could develop the technical skills needed in their jobs.” \n   \n Some software developers went on to earn Microsoft Certifications for their new roles, although certification wasn’t required. Others earned Applied Skills credentials for job-specific scenarios involving Azure services. In addition, OpenHack challenges gave developers a fun way to explore connected truck technologies, such as Azure Machine Learning and Azure AI. In addition, Ford Otosan rolled out Microsoft Dynamics and Microsoft 365—platform changes that brought new roles for some IT staffers. Their learning paths included the option to earn industry-recognized certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (CRM) and Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals. \n   \n According to Engin, “Microsoft is one of our technology partners. Microsoft provides the learning path for each of our cloud roles and supports the required training and certifications. These are good opportunities for our employees, and they really enjoy the trainings.” \n   \n The learning programs not only equipped employees with the skills they needed but also influenced the selection of Azure services at Ford Otoson. Engin reports, “That really helped to motivate us to decide to move to cloud services and to use Azure Cloud Services for our other products.” \n   \n The strategic advantage of learning at Setur \n Established in 1964 by Koç Holding, Setur began as a duty-free retail business. Today Setur has expanded to include services for travelers and tour operators, with more than 200 authorized sales agencies, in addition to the duty-free shops at ports and borders. Setur also operates Turkey’s largest online corporate travel portal, Seturbiz.com. \n   \n For Faik Ünal, Setur Information Security and System Development Manager, digital transformation meant a move to Azure software as a service (SaaS). This pay-as-you-go computing model is popular for its cost-effective, highly available, scalable, and flexible services. “These SaaS solutions, and the productivity we gain, streamline processes and enable us to remain at forefront of technology, thus contributing significantly to our company’s competitiveness and growth,” observes Faik. “Azure cloud resources are of high importance for our company.” \n   \n For the 150 IT employees, the move to Azure SaaS brought a learning curve. Like Ford Otosan, the Setur management team carefully assessed the cloud services they would need from a learning standpoint, in addition to considering strategic and technological factors. Then they developed individualized learning plans for employees—a practice that Faik recommends for any organization going through a similar transformation. \n   \n “A one-size-fits-all approach may not suffice. You have to plan the right training for the right employees, for example, and also tailor learning plans to the distinct needs of various teams and your functions,” Faik elaborates. For system architects and others working directly on Setur’s cloud platforms, useful credentials included Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals and Microsoft Azure Security Engineer Associate, among others. \n   \n Faik himself earned Microsoft Certified Solution Expert (MCSE) and MCSE Security certifications 20 years ago and more recently passed Exam AZ-500 to earn the Microsoft Certified: Microsoft Azure Security Engineer certification. In his view, “The easiest way to demonstrate your skills is to be certified.” \n   \n It takes time to learn new skills. “It’s a long journey,” Faik adds. “You also have to motivate people.” Setur managers do that in several ways. For example, managers track individual accomplishments against the organization’s key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop actions plans to help people meet their goals. During meetings, managers like to recognize the people gaining expertise in a technical area and to celebrate accomplishments, such as earning credentials or certifications. Employees are also encouraged to share their learning journeys and achievements on LinkedIn. \n   \n As Faik says, “When colleagues share their journey on LinkedIn, I just like and share and that’s it. Congratulations!” \n   \n He advises other companies to think strategically about learning, keeping the end goal in view, and then developing learning pathways. This approach has helped Setur meet its business goals while inspiring teams to come together around the new technologies. As he notes, ”SaaS was a good starting point for us on our cloud journey, because it’s easier to integrate services into our existing software life cycles and processes. That made it easier and faster for us to learn and adopt.” \n   \n Application modernization at Arçelik means new skills for workers \n Zafer Kaya, Director – IT Special Projects, promotes learning and development at Arçelik, manufacturer of popular household appliances offered under its own name and several others, including Beko and Grundig. Arçelik has grown to become Turkey’s market leader in appliances and employs around 40,000 people. Its digital transformation programs are aimed at integrating and modernizing software systems and building ever more advanced manufacturing facilities. \n   \n To help its employees bridge the old and the new, Arçelik invested in multiple learning channels. Like Ford Otosan and Setur, Arçelik managers develop learning plans and help their teams track progress, but Zafer admits that this is difficult to do when so many online training programs are available. \n   \n “It’s important to have proper capability building programs, but these are rare,” he explains. “We find that classroom and lab environments work best.” To this end, Arçelik discovered that employees preferred the Microsoft Learn learning paths. ”Our software developers are joining the program,” Zafer points out. “System management and network teams, as well as our software and data AI teams, benefit from this platform, because capability building is among our top priorities.” \n   \n A case in point: System and Cloud Architect Ömer Üçler had no cloud experience before joining Arçelik several years ago. “The world is becoming digital, and we need to keep up,” he states. As part of Arçelik’s digital transformation, Ömer and his colleagues are replacing on-premises systems at the company’s many branch offices. The project involves “almost all the Azure services” he observes, including Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), a container orchestration system with which Ömer is now fluent, thanks to his participation in the training opportunities and resources available through Microsoft Learn. \n   \n Ömer admits, “I had a lot to learn. I improved myself through the helpful resources in this program.” Ömer earned his first Windows Server certification in 2008. Ten years later, he added his first Azure certification. More recently, he passed more exams and earned additional certifications. Ömer credits the free Microsoft Certification Practice Assessments for his progress. “The Enterprise Skills Initiative is more useful for my teammates and for me,” he acknowledges. “And the best part for me is being able to troubleshoot issues when they arise. I have more confidence in my job.” \n   \n In developing a learning culture at Arçelik, Zafer has heard from concerned managers who wonder about retaining qualified employees. What if they get a Microsoft Certification and then go to work elsewhere? However, worker retention hasn’t been an issue at Arçelik. In fact, employee satisfaction has risen. As Zafer sees it, “Certification is important in the company in order to test yourself, your knowledge.” \n   \n Ömer agrees. “Education is important for us. Directors, managers, architects—it doesn't matter what your role is. All of us need to train for this area.” \n   \n The Future of Work Initiative continues to shape Koç businesses and teams \n As the teams at Ford Otosan, Setur, and Arçelik have experienced, the learning culture across Koç Holding has helped drive innovation, prepare teams for the future, bring new ideas to market faster, and build a workforce with an enviable set of in-demand talents. In the past two years, employees have completed more than 4,000 advanced role-based trainings, earned over 500 Microsoft Certifications, and attended dozens of hackathons to perfect their skills in Microsoft Azure, security, Microsoft Dynamics, Microsoft 365, and other solutions. Although the term is just getting started, it is time to start planning ahead for your school break. In additional to rest and relaxation there are a few creative ways to earn Microsoft Certifications—and college credit—over summer or winter break. Certifications not only help you demonstrate your technical skills and open doors to careers, but they can also count as credit toward your college degree. In this post, you’ll meet Sam Jones and Jason Powell, who saved money and completed their degrees faster with college credits they earned as a result of their Microsoft Certifications. They were focused on getting a good education and on using certifications to get ahead with their tech careers as quickly as possible. You’ll see how they did it, and we’ll show you some tools and resources you can use to do the same. \n   \n ACE Learning Evaluations \n Microsoft Certifications are industry-recognized credentials that many employers look for in new hires. If your college recognizes them as valid for credits, you might be able use them to graduate faster and to save money on your education, while getting a job or advancing in your career. The American Council on Education (ACE) Learning Evaluations department has a nationally recognized process for reviewing and validating industry training. With this process, ACE has reviewed many Microsoft Certifications and has recommended them for academic credit. The ACE National Guide lists all the Microsoft Certifications that have successfully gone through this process. It also lists the many institutions of higher learning that accept the ACE-recommended training. To learn more about ACE and to follow step-by-step guidance for getting college credit for your certifications, read College credit for certification exams. \n   \n Sam Jones: Using certifications to accelerate his undergraduate degree \n When Sam Jones started working in IT for the United States government at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), he didn’t have an undergraduate degree. His managers recommended that he complete a degree so he could advance his career and move into higher salary roles. One of the reasons he chose to attend the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) was that the school accepted many industry-recognized certifications, including Microsoft Certifications, that he had earned before starting college. In fact, Sam was granted 60 academic credits, verified though ACE, for those certifications. \n   \n At UMGC, Sam studied computer networks and cybersecurity and was able to complete a four-year degree in just two years, thanks to those 60 credits. Sam considers the value of earning certifications “priceless.” He observes, “Not only are employers looking for those certifications, but you’re also getting college credit for them. You don’t have to sit through a college course or write long papers. You can study for certification, pass the exam, put that on your résumé, get a nice job. And you can get college credits.” \n   \n Sam encourages students who are interested in tech to earn certifications and get that college credit. He also has some advice for prospective students in the workforce who have been earning certifications and who are considering returning to college. He exclaims, “I wish we could yell this from the rooftops because there are a ton of people out there like me, who have a lot of certifications and want a degree—but feel like a degree would take too much time. My biggest advice is to get an assessment of your certifications with ACE and make sure none of them are out of date. Send them over to the transcript service, and send the transcript to your school. A small fee to eliminate thousands of dollars of credits is a no-brainer. Figure out where you want to go based on the credits that ACE gave you, and figure out the shortest timeline to a degree.” \n   \n Sam loves the idea of using a long break to train for and pass certification exams, especially if you want to save money and accelerate your degree process. He notes, “It took me about three months to study for a certification exam. If you’re studying over summer break, you could take the exam right before you return to school. When I tell people what I did and how I did it, people look at me like I’m a magical unicorn. But everyone should know how to do this. If you have credentials, you should be able to use them the same way I did.” \n   \n Jason Powell: Using certifications to get elective credits for his undergraduate degree \n Like Sam, Jason Powell took a nontraditional path to higher education. Jason served in the United States Air Force, and then he worked in IT for a defense contractor in Iraq. Along the way, his employer encouraged him to earn Microsoft Certifications to stay on top of changing technology. He was looking for ways to advance professionally and to be more valuable to his company, so in addition, he decided to earn an undergraduate degree. He chose to attend Excelsior College, a remote learning institution that “was very friendly for transfer credits, as long as the credits applied to the degree.” He received a degree in liberal studies, with an emphasis in computer tech and a minor in history. He learned through ACE that he could use Microsoft Certifications for two elective courses. \n   \n Jason spent his time between deployments studying for certification exams or taking college classes. He was very motivated to get the degree, which would give him the opportunity to advance to a system administrator role and to reduce the chance that he’d be maintaining computers in IT “outsites.” He says that earning Microsoft Certifications “helped dramatically. Pursuing certifications sets you apart. You’re going after the practical knowledge of your craft by going after those certifications. After a while, if you continue to get certifications, the accumulation of that achievement shows when you’re on the phone for an interview.” \n   \n Jason notes, “By using Microsoft Certifications for two elective courses, it probably saved me 16 weeks of coursework and thousands of dollars. It’s a remarkable amount of money you could save.” He urges students to get Microsoft training and certification. “Simply do it. Do what you can to minimize the amount of time and money you must expend to achieve your goal. It’s about efficiency. And applying yourself in the most efficient way.” \n   \n Tips and tricks:  Using your break to prepare for certification exams \n These stories show that if you have the will, you can find the way! A Pearson VUE Value of IT Certification report found that the more experience IT professionals have, the more likely it is they have multiple certifications, which indicates that acquiring IT credentials is a lifelong pursuit. \n   \n Sam and Jason both continue to make learning an essential part of their careers. Sam is in networking, finishing a master’s degree, and looking at earning the Microsoft Certified: Azure Network Engineer Associate certification “because the cloud is so hot right now.” Jason is in a cyber-technical role and working on a doctorate. Both are looking forward to a time when their Microsoft Certifications can be applied to advanced degrees, too. They encourage students in college to pursue Microsoft Certifications before they graduate. The time is now! Jason points out, “It’s important to apply your time and emphasis to whatever it is that you need to be good at for the role that you’re in. You only have so much time—everything else you can make more of. One of the most critical success elements in a tech career is a willingness to put in the effort, time, and training to learn new skills and technologies. \n   \n According to a 2020 IDC white paper, technology professionals who believe that continuous learning benefits their career have what’s called a “growth mindset.” The study shows that it’s incredibly important to stay current for those in a long-term career. Of those with certifications, 91% believe that the effort they put into acquiring new skills strongly contributes to their success – not just the skills themselves. 1 In other words, dedication can ultimately add personal and professional value in a rapidly evolving technology market. Let’s take a look at two individuals whose growth mindset helped them through long-term careers. Both credit their certification journeys for their continuing success over many years. \n   \n Watch Tammy and Charles-Henri’s #ProudToBeCertified stories \n \n   \n Charles-Henri: Keeping up with the cloud \n “If you have been in IT for a while,” says Charles-Henri, an MVP data platform & technical leader, “you certainly went through the big shift that was the transition to the cloud.” He remembers well how that shakeup brought home for him the need for continuous training. “There is nothing that evolves faster than IT,” he says, “especially the cloud. I know today's knowledge will be obsolete by tomorrow. That's why I'm counting on [Microsoft] Certifications to let me know what knowledge I need to keep up to date.” \n   \n For him, continuously learning has provided stability and respect in fast-changing times – especially when it comes to his livelihood, “These certifications” he says, “have really helped me earn my customers' trust as a consultant and in general, they give me a lot more confidence and assurance in my own knowledge.” They also provide a valuable planning tool to maintain his mastery. “Ever since Microsoft updated Microsoft Learn,” he says, “learning new technologies has become much easier thanks to the lab, the sandbox, and the learning paths, which are really thorough on the Microsoft Learn site.” Charles-Henri has earned many certifications during his career, and he is determined to keep learning – that way he can stay on top of the rapidly changing technology and continue to grow throughout his career.   \n   \n \n   \n Tammy: Discovering a new door to opportunity \n “I'm so happy I made the decision I did many years ago to get certified.” Says Tammy Schwark, an IT Pro/Consultant, “It's the best thing I could have done.” For Tammy, her learning journey began 25 years ago when she was working as the Microsoft Exchange administrator for a hospital.  She found out a male peer in a similar role at the other hospital in the same city made significantly more money than she did. While unfair pay gap was upsetting, it fueled her to do something about it. \n   \n Having already earned one Microsoft Certification, she was determined to do more by getting additional training and pursued another Microsoft Certification. She started off studying on her own, then she turned to study books and guides as well as the exam outline. “The biggest piece, of course, is working with the product, right?” She confirms, “And that's what I would continue to do over the years.” It was hard work, but she passed, and she says that getting an early certification “opened up doors for me, big time.” Soon she was offered a job in Bermuda, where she lived for two years before moving back to Canada. She continues to support the company in Bermuda, along with their office in Florida, while also pursuing continuous career growth. \n   \n As she moves forward in her career, Tammy leverages Microsoft resources to help her keep up with the rapid change in technology. Microsoft Learn has been a critical resource and learning tool, and the Microsoft Tech Community is where she says she found her inspiration. To colleagues looking for a similar connection, Tammy advises they share, collaborate, and celebrate their certification journey: “Get out there in the community on Twitter, LinkedIn, whatever, and find those people. Follow the products that you think you're interested in. You'll eventually learn how to follow the people who work with those products, from the MVPs to developers or IT pros. Just immerse yourself in it.” \n   \n \n   \n No matter where you are in your tech career, success is as much about determination and dedication as it is about learning. Extensive resources, like hands-on labs, complement the experiential learning in the program. \n A holistic process at Tietoevry integrates business strategy, resourcing needs, executive sponsorship, and individual career development. \n The program plans for business needs and places employees immediately into their new roles—while still training—providing mentorship, on-the-job learning, and billable assignments. \n Reskilling internal employees is more efficient than trying to secure new external resources with appropriate skills from the current highly competitive job market. \n Employees are valued and retained, and they’re able to plan the next phases of their careers, including ongoing learning and certification. They join approximately 2,500 employees company-wide who have already earned 3,600 Azure certifications as part of the overall Tietoevry skilling goal. \n \n   \n Finnish company Tietoevry is the largest IT services provider in the Nordics, with 24,000 employees worldwide serving customers in 90 countries and regions. As the company’s customers move to the cloud, the skills required of Tietoevry teams are changing accordingly. Hiring new talent is difficult and expensive—current IT skills are in demand everywhere. At the same time, the company has a base of great employees with years of productive experience in legacy technologies. \n   \n Many organizations face similar situations, but Tietoevry created an extraordinarily holistic plan for reskilling that serves the company’s needs, valuing and retaining its employees, and building robust teams to serve its customers. To address the challenge, in 2021, Tietoevry created its Connect Academy—a comprehensive program that focuses on reskilling internal employees on Microsoft technologies, with simultaneous new job placement within the company. \n   \n \n   \n A ‘Keep Learning’ culture \n One of the pillars of the Tietoevry culture is “Keep Learning,” which means that the company and its employees seek to continue developing their skills—now and in the future—and to stay curious and relevant. “Our employees do value learning very highly, and that's why we want to support them in this,” says Lelde Saleniece, Tietoevry’s People Development Consultant. “The [Connect] Academy is one great example of how we do that, how we support them—not just in upskilling but in reskilling, as well. We care for them and their knowledge, and we want them to stay here.” \n   \n The Connect Academy begins with an analysis of business needs and the resources required to meet them. After the analysis, the candidate selection phase starts and everyone can apply. Line managers nominate candidates, and then, in the “handshake” step, candidates go through a career-planning stage, join their new teams, and begin training—including job shadowing and assignments. Microsoft Learn training resources are key, notes Lelde. “Microsoft has been very helpful, and definitely, without the support and collaboration, this wouldn't be as good a program as it is.” \n   \n Microsoft Learn resources are at the core of the experiential learning journey, reports Lead Cloud Advisor Bjørn Sigurd Hove, who is a mentor for learners in the program. The certifications that learners earn demonstrate mastery, he observes, “But in my view, the road to that certification is maybe more important.” In addition to instructor-led training, he explains, “I stressed that they should use the study guides, which have links to resources on each and every subject.” Bjørn also points learners to the Microsoft Learn labs for hands-on experience. “The certification is just the end goal of this journey, but the journey is most important.” \n   \n The training component is intense—two months of dedicated time for classwork, labs, exam preparation, and certification exams. Raja Ali, a Tietoevry employee who completed the Connect Academy, used all the offered Microsoft Learn self-study resources. “The real deal was when you were sitting down and working on Microsoft Learn,” he recalls. “The coolest thing was the sandbox experience you get in Microsoft Learn, when you're reading something and they ask you to actually do the activity right there.” \n   \n The many benefits of this process start with meeting the business needs, ensuring that “we are not training people just for the sake of the training, but we are training people to the actual roles and actual jobs,” notes Ari Lehtovaara, Head of the Connect Academy. “The main idea is to give them basic knowledge so that they can fit into the team and start working.” \n   \n Tietoevry Line Manager Niklas Klasén welcomes reskilled employees onto his team. He points out that selecting candidates for the academy is important, given how hard it is to recruit suitable talent from outside the company. Their background is important. “For me,” Niklas emphasizes, “being able to combine the skills that people already have from their long IT careers with the new cloud experience, that has been a very valuable concept for us.” \n   \n At every step of the two-month program, the Connect Academy assists employees and supports them in their new roles. They join their new teams immediately when training starts, with a line manager and mentor to help them. \n   \n \n   \n Partnering to build skills and careers in the cloud space \n Legacy skills can be helpful to the team, Niklas explains. “Let's say, for example, they worked with networking on-prem or in our own datacenters. They are now subject matter experts when it comes to connecting that datacenter to the cloud and are a key resource when it comes to migrating from the datacenter, as well.” \n   \n With Microsoft Learn partnering to provide technical product knowledge at core of the Connect Academy, Tietoevry has created a thoughtfully strategic way forward for the company—and, most of all, for its employees.
