Changes to the Windows 10 Update experience were announced today by Mike Fortin, Corporate Vice President, Windows. These changes, introduced with the Windows 10 May 2019 Update, will put customers more in control of updates to their systems. Highlights include:
- Improving user choice, quality and transparency
- Increased focus on user feedback, including a longer release preview phase.
- Users will be in control of feature updates. Microsoft will only automatically initiate a new feature update if the installed version of Windows 10 is nearing the end of support (for security updates).
- New features for user control of updates
- New “check for updates” functionality allows users to clearly know when they are initiating quality or feature updates.
- Users of Windows 10 Home Edition will now have the option to pause updates (both feature and monthly) up to a total of 35 days (7 days at a time) when a quality or feature update is offered.
- Intelligent Active Hours to avoid disruptive reboots.
- Expanded focus on quality
- More time in the Release Preview phase, with additional ecosystem partner interaction for added early-feedback.
- Improved early detection and resolution of low-volume, but high-severity issues.
- Public dashboard for increased issue transparency
- New dashboard communicating issues, update status and messaging.
