Windows Server License with Software Assurance (SA) – Renewal Options

I purchased a Windows Server 2022 Standard license with 3 years of Software Assurance (SA), which is expiring next month.

I would like to know how the renewal process works.

  • I understand that Windows Server 2025 Standard with 3 years of SA is available. Do I need to upgrade to Windows Server 2025, or can I continue using Windows Server 2022 while renewing SA through the Windows Server 2025 offering?
  • Are there any other options to renew or extend the existing SA coverage?
  • Also, is there any option to extend the Extended Support End Date?

Appreciate any advice from those familiar with Microsoft Windows Server licensing.

  • Renewing Software Assurance does not require you to deploy Windows Server 2025 immediately. Microsoft’s Windows Server licensing guidance permits running Windows Server 2022 Standard under eligible 2025 Standard downgrade rights, with the acquired version’s use rights still governing deployment.

Before your coverage expires, ask your licensing reseller for an SA-only renewal against the existing agreement and licensed core quantities. Confirm the purchasing program, renewal deadline and available term; a quote for a new license plus SA is not automatically the only renewal route. Keep the existing entitlement records and verify any CAL coverage separately.

SA provides version and other benefits, but renewing it does not extend Windows Server 2022’s published Extended Support end date. Any later security-update program would have separate availability and terms; do not assume one is included. Your reseller should confirm the exact renewal SKU and continued 2022 deployment rights in writing before you order.
