RDS and Active Directory

I see that Remote Desktop Services can be configured on Windows Server 2xxx servers member of Workgroup.

What are *all* the limitations and disadvantages of installing RDS without Active Directory and the advantages of using AD?

  • Without AD you will be limited in configuring settings for users (With AD you can use Group Policy), User Profile Disks is something that you will have to keep locally (Even with FSLogix) and all the roles must be installed on the machine itself. Don't know / Can't imagine you can connect to other servers and if so, user profile behavior will not be nice for users. (A profile per server)

What's our use case and why are you thinking about running RDS without AD?
