Windows Server, version 1709 is a Semi-Annual Channel release based on the Server Core installation option of the Datacenter or Standard editions. The Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel releases of Windows Server are designed to empower developers to evolve their container-based applications by delivering features more frequently.
Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel releases are governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Windows Server, version 1709 is reaching the end of its supported lifecycle on April 9th, 2019. After that date, this version will continue to run, but will not be updated or be supported in production environments. Windows Server, version 1709 will no longer be offered on the Microsoft Volume Licensing Site, however it will remain available for users with Visual Studio Subscriptions.

Q. Will my existing VMs and containers continue to run?
A. Yes, but they will not be updated or supported. We recommend using the latest Semi-Annual Channel or Long-Term Servicing Channel release to remain secure.
Q. Is upgrade supported?
A. A clean install is recommended from Windows Server, version 1709 to a newer version. Upgrade is officially supported beginning with Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server, version 1809.
