Re: HEVC video decoding broken with B-frames
Hi josh_bodner ! Do you have any insights, plans, or updates you could share about HEVC support on Windows ? The fact that it seems to work with older versions of the Windows Store HEVC extension, as found in the last few comments, is quite curious.8.8KViews0likes15CommentsRe: HEVC video decoding broken with B-frames
You are absolutely right, very nice find. So it may actually be a regression of the HEVC Extension itself and not completely related to Edge. It's still interesting that the Movies & TV app plays the same video just fine on any version9.1KViews0likes1CommentRe: Now, autofill your saved passwords from Microsoft Edge on your phone!
Sanjay_Joshi Thank you for sharing your inputs and testing the product! Many thanks to you and the team working on the features - this is awesome. About Autofill currently not working with work or school accounts I'll be sure to check back for improvements ! But I may have been unclear. The thing is I don't want to enable Autofill for my work/school account - I understand it is not working and it makes perfect sense. Them having the right controls is important, as you said; especially for secure data such as passwords. In my scenario, I want to enable autofill for my personal account, but I can't do so because Authenticator detected a work/school account in the Outlook app. What I do not understand is why having a work/school account on *my device* prevents me to use autofill with *my personal account*. Whether or not school/work organizations want to allow autofill for their accounts is their choice, and they have control over it. But I believe these controls should impact their organizations' accounts only, and not impact using autofill with a personal account on a personal device as it does currently. I think jcsharp was asking for the same thing in his second point. Anyway, I'll wait for improvements in these scenarios hopefully - thanks again for your answers regarding our queries, and congrats to the team for the feature launch !6.4KViews1like0CommentsRe: Now, autofill your saved passwords from Microsoft Edge on your phone!
Sanjay_Joshi This works great ! I was happy to have it, but there are a few things preventing me to leave it enabled. One issue lies with Edge itself : on Android, enabling Authenticator's accessibility service makes Edge go into an "accessibility-oriented" UI, changing the main "..." menu into a list for example, and the tab view (with thumbnails) into a list (without thumbnails). This UI can certainly be nice to have for those who need it, but it can't be disabled manually, forcing you to disable any accessibility services to restore the original Edge UI. Since many apps such as Authenticator use accessibility services for other purposes, the lack of a manual toggle in Edge for its accessibility mode seems like an issue, especially now that a MS app relies on the accessibility services. The other issue is that you can't enable it for your personal account if it finds any work/school account on any app on the phone. I thought it was fine since I don't have a work/school account in Authenticator, but no - having your school account in the outlook app prevents you from enabling autofill in the app. You can delete that account from outlook and successfully enable autofill, but then you don't get mails or calendar, and autofills is auto-disabled as soon as you add the school account back.6.8KViews0likes3CommentsRe: Sleeping tabs FAQ
Eleanor_Huynh Ooh ! Looks great ! I've been using https://github.com/greatsuspender/thegreatsuspender to suspend (not freeze) through an extension, so this is great news. Do webpages with form input get frozen as well, though ? I assume freezing won't discard these inputs, if I understood correctly, as opposed to suspending ?82KViews0likes1CommentRe: Dev channel update to 86.0.587.0 is live
A lot of fixes in this one ! I wished the "clear cookies on exit" bug fixed on this build was the one I reported back in May, but it seems not π . josh_bodner , do you have any insight on what's going on with it ? It's not listed as a known issue, so I'm not sure if the team didn't look into that yet (you all are most probably busy with a lot of other fixes and features I'm sure, or even some well-deserved nice summer holidays !) or if you were unable to repro. It's about the local storage being cleared when "clear cookies on exit" is enabled, regardless of the exceptions in the "allow cookies" list. My comments describing the issue and lengthy repro steps literally disappeared (???), but your answers to these comments did not.16KViews0likes1CommentRe: Dev channel update to 85.0.564.8 is live
josh_bodner The new "Picture dictionary" feature is fun to use when available ! I definitely miss the "simple" dictionary from Edge though. I can work around by using a bing sidebar search on the word I want, then adding "meaning" to the word query in the sidebar search. But this is less than ideal and it's one of the reasons I still do my reading on legacy Edge : One click on a word and the definition is there ! I know I can translate the entire page, but it does not improve my English as much as looking for definitions does, since I can't see what was translated into what. Does the team have any plans for that classic dictionary yet, to go along with the picture dictionary π ?11KViews2likes1CommentRe: Dev channel update to 85.0.538.0 is live
josh_bodner wrote: AmineI I'd only worry about it if it impacts your ability to re-install that same app. Otherwise, it shouldn't do any harm to leave it. josh_bodner I initially couldn't reinstall the app, which is why I was troubleshooting in that direction, but it turned out to be another issue so it's fine now, thanks ! (It was related to the "tabbed apps" flag, and was fixed with this week's build π .)8.5KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Dev channel update to 85.0.538.0 is live
>Fixed an issue where uninstalling a website installed as an app sometimes fails. Great ! I ran into this issue last build, uninstalling an app crashed Edge in the process. But now that app is stuck in a "semi-uninstalled" state (Edge reports it's not installed, control panel reports it is). Any idea on what should I do to get out of this state ? Just delete the app's entry from control panel and be done with it, or are there more elements I should make sure to clean up ? So far simply deleting the control panel entry did not have any bad repercussions, but the usual prompt "This app appears to be already uninstalled - do you want to remove the entry ?" did not appear so I had to remove it from the registry (For anyone in the same situation, the keys are in HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ , CTRL+F for your app name )9.2KViews1like2CommentsRe: Dev channel update to 84.0.502.0 is live
josh_bodner Great update this week too ! Shyer Shy UI, tooltips issue (I thought it was definitely an issue with a Windows Insider build, so it's surprising to see here hahah), and security for the payment cards (The only reason I didn't add any yet !) are especially interesting to me π . Sadly it also looks like the issue with clearing data on browser close is still there - Exceptions to the "Clear cookies and site data on close" rule are disregarded : while the cookies are persisted for these exceptions, the local storage is deleted regardless. And finally, the expiration of some flags is a bit saddening as well - Tab groups for example, which got into Stable chrome, can still be enabled on Chrome canary with chrome://flags/#temporary-unexpire-flags-m82 , but not on Edge I'm afraid. Same for Tab hover cards, which were easier to use than tooltips. I'll be on the lookout for their comeback, hopefully π !13KViews1like2CommentsRe: Creating a Beautiful, Informative and Productive New Tab Experience
MissyQ Thanks for sharing these details with us π ! One of the few issues I have with the NTP is that when you go offline, the top sites are not displayed anymore The background is quite nice to be fair, but as a developer I happen to have quite a few localhost links pinned in there that I would still like to access without internet connexion, even if they hide the beautiful background :,( ! I'd love them to get added back there someday. Until then, staring at this background feels strangely nice so I'm fine with it π ! Thanks again to the team for all your work on this great browser !13KViews1like0CommentsRe: Dev channel update to 82.0.446.0 is live
josh_bodner Thanks for the heads-up ! Controlled rollout, eh - hyped. Now I'll definitely check my context menu regularly for that option . By the way, I've always wondered how/why these controlled rollouts were used in a test context. I see the point of controlled rollout for big releases, like Stable Windows 10's build updates, but I understand it less for features in an Insider build - been wondering that for a while, and not only regarding Edge Insider but also Windows Insider. Since we use an Insider channel, it should mean we're fine with testing, encountering and reporting issues & bugs, I believe. Is it about user satisfaction ? Separating crashes due to the feature in testing and others ? Not sure honestly.7.1KViews0likes5CommentsRe: Dev channel update to 82.0.446.0 is live
josh_bodner josh_bodner wrote: [...] "Fixed an issue where clicking the βAdd all tabs to a new collectionβ context menu option crashes the browser. Otherwise, could you please point me to the context menu you're thinking about ?15KViews3likes9CommentsRe: Remove the "uninstall" option from the site icons pinned to home screen in Android
HotCakeX I'm afraid this could depend on the launcher and not on the app itself. I'm not aware of any Android feature to do this. It's most probably the launcher's decision to display or not an uninstall button. I could be wrong of course, but did you ever find an app with shortcuts that didn't display this "uninstall" option ?5.3KViews0likes8CommentsRe: Autofill in Microsoft Edge
ppnacho wrote: With respect to the first section, it seems fundamental to me that you can not see the memorized passwords. It requires a minimum of security or at least put it a little difficult to see those keys. As long as you do not put a master key (like firefox does) I will never use this option. It always seemed like a big security hole on Google's part. Microsoft should not follow that line. Anyone can be absent from his post for a minute (no more) and someone can see all the keys in a very simple way. Doesn't it ask for the Windows account password though ppnacho ? For me it does - and it makes sense to me since the browser is only as protected as the account it's on. If you're "away from your post", then since they don't have your Windows password you're fine.49KViews1like26CommentsRe: Edge crashes on Sharepoint or Azure DevOps sites
Mr1008 Hmmm ... suspicious indeed. You could check by logging in Azure DevOps with a Microsoft account (and not an organization one). I'm not overly familiar with the entry you attached, and I'm out of ideas as I can't even reproduce here, so I'll have to leave that case to someone else :) .2.4KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Edge crashes on Sharepoint or Azure DevOps sites
Could it be the auth page then Mr1008 , instead of specifically Azure DevOps or SharePoint ? I think organizations can customize them too (mine put a custom background in it), maybe something in there doesn't like the browser (or the browser doesn't like it ;) ). Would make sense if it also happens on SharePoint for you apparently, and even once here as you said ?2.4KViews0likes2Comments
