After a resounding success of v1 (released in March 2021), we are happy to announce the release of Workflow Analyzer v2 which enables SCOM user to investigate mechanism of workflows in real time, while also giving an option to view saved log files in an elegant way.

(More about V1: Workflow Analyzer for SCOM is back! - The Monitoring Guys))

To give a quick intro about WFAnalzyer tool, this tool was developed to view how a workflow passes data between the modules. This tool is very useful in quickly troubleshooting and determining problems in a workflow and helping decide what to change in a SCOM Management Pack, to get a workflow working.

Feedback received after v1 was around the absence of metadata for logs (traces) and no visibility of important performance statistics such as CPU / memory usage. There was growing anticipation amongst the users for the next release of workflow analyzer v2 after SCOM2022 release [SCOM 2022: the most exciting updates - SquaredUp]

With V2, customers can run WFAnalzyer on their environment and share .wftrace file (logs) with customer engineers, rather than troubleshooting for long hours remotely. These shared logs can simply be reviewed by customer engineers to understand what went wrong in workflows and MPs. This saves multiple hops between customers and Microsoft Support.

Additionally, live monitoring of tool is not required now since, the tool can be run in the background and the traces can be exported & viewed via the history buffering to understand what went wrong!

Let’s get into more details on newer features of V2!!

What's New?

  • Easier Troubleshooting with Exported Traces: This enhancement allows the user to save their ongoing traces in a file location of their choice (.wftrace extension), which can be unzipped to view all traces (along with process data and thread data), in multiple csv’s .

  • History Buffering: To make the viewing of saved traces easy for the user, another feature was added which allows the user a one-click process to select the trace file (.wftrace) and it gives an accurate representation of the tool , how it would have looked at any particular user input time (via slider)
